Here's one that isn't imaged often - it's small.
It's called the Red Rectangle, in Monoceros.
My image isn't great - needs longer focal length, better optics etc.
I've caught the basics of it so I'm happy.

9.25SCT @f/6.3, CGEM guided with MGEN.
Canon 60d @-9C, ISO1600 35x 120s.

Yeah that's great, you have the square star shape showing quite clearly. These little blighters are tough to image, so well done on taking up the challenge

Excellent effort, I have not seen this attempted by amateur astroimagers before.
Well done.
Cheers:thumbsup:

Great Tony. Only a couple of days ago I was looking at information on the Red Square and learnt that there was also a Red Rectangle!

Hi Tony,
Well done - it would be good to use lucky imaging like Anthony Wesley to get a closeup.
I didn't know about that object.

Thanks for your comments.
I like these less common objects - not exactly spectacular, but still fascinating.

That's a courageous attempt Tony. I thought of trying it with my 12.5" but wimped out. Well done.

That is actually very cool! Top stuff!

Some internet images of it actually remind me of the Route of Ages from Andromeda.

That is interesting Allan - the article text is about the Red Rectangle but I am sure that the provided image in the article is of the Red Square. (Unfortunately, I cannot let Anne know because the site Welcome page advises that she died over a year ago  )

oh dear,

can you provide a valid link to this target?

Funny - today I looked up the red square and one of the article had a picture of the red rectangle. Maybe they need geometry lessons?

Thanks for your comments everyone - looking forward to your 12.5" image Geoff!

I have tried for this target visually with my 20" scope on many occasions without any luck whatsoever. Nice to see what it looks like! LOL

The Wikipedia articles give images or links to images. The 'Red Rectangle' is distinctly rectangular and doesn't show many close stars. The 'Red Square' is distinctly square and does show many close stars. And everything in the 'Red Square' photo is red - as I recall, the image is taken in the infrared.

It was too fascinating for me to resist. It was one of the first objects I pointed C11 at when I first bought my cooled camera. I need to revisit it with more exposure time. Thanks for the reminder!
