I was a small child when this happened but I still remember it like it was yesterday. Horrible tragedy for all concerned.

Yeah, I also clearly remember hearing about this tragedy. I was told after coming home from school and felt absolutely guttered that they died on the launchpad and was dismayed that the Apollo program might be setback by years.
NASA made a good comeback though by having Apollo 8 orbit the Moon by the end of the following year.
