There is a fascinating story published in ScienceAlert about experiments in the measurement of quantum fluctuations in a vacuum. The story is here:

http://www.sciencealert.com/physicists-say-they-ve-managed-to-manipulate-pure-nothingness

The concept of squeezing a quantum vacuum and producing changes to quantum fluctuations within the vacuum is breakthrough stuff. Have a look at the graphic that shows the changes to quantum fluctuations when the vacuum is squeezed, and most amazing of all...... something else weird happens too, the fluctuations in some places appear to drop below the background noise level, which is lower than the ground state of empty space, something the scientists call an "astonishing phenomenon (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/01/170118132244.htm)".

What is happening in that area where it becomes lower than the noise floor?

Great stuff.

Amazing. Sounds like the basis for negative, or at least zero read noise cameras !!

Glen,

You lost me at 'squeeze a vacuum'; what!

So that's it! Ha! Now I can tell my wife that she is definitely wrong! There IS more than a vacuum between my ears!

Well done to these guys. Just reading an explanation is enough to make your brain want a holiday, let alone actually researching the stuff.

Maybe something to do with the latest model Electrolux or Dysons ??
