We've just bought one and it will be arriving in about 2 months.
Currently brainstorming about what we can print!
We're going to try a few adapters and odd bits and pieces for scopes. Also looking to set up a fish tank furnished with 3D printed miniatures of the shop fittings and display scopes so the fish can run their own telescope shop too!
Who on here owns a 3D printer and what did you print, astro gear or other stuff?

I've got one but I don't use it as much as I should.
I've printed a few adapters and things like that.
Have a browse on Thingiverse (http://www.thingiverse.com/), there's bound to be something on there that catches your eye :)
I'm thinking I'll do myself a timelapse slider when I have some time, something like a cross between this (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1767771) and this (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:314027), but using a threaded rod instead of a belt :D

What about a chess set.
Make one with animals.
Lion for king, a kangaroo for queen whatever but with a little imagination you could have and interesting and unique chess set.
There are all sorts of themes one could adopt.

Absolutely brilliant Alex!
Maybe a Meade V Celestron set, LX200ACF & Edge as Queens they can "goto anywhere".

I have given the idea a lot of thought and there are some interesting propositions.
You could have one where say Donald Trump is king on one side and Putin or even Obarma as the otherking or the Queen of England as king.
One with Malcolm and Bill opposing each other.
I would like to merge chess with monopoly and introduce cash and a market. So you don't just get to take a square you have to pay for it as well and any squares you piece crosses you have to pay rent to a bank.
I have chess on my phone.
I like it very much but I am up to 1300 odd games so my mind can't help but thinking about making different pieces.
I would like a chess game with same yen times the number of squares and many more different pieces.
But with a good 3d printer and software I think I could produce something that would surprise people.

with 3D printers if you can design in 3D Cad then the sky is the limit. If you can't then there are millions of things to print on line including a huge amount of chess sets.

Oh dear god I'm dying here!
But what will be the pawns?
Despite having lived in Russia, chess is just one thing I didn't pick up.
Ashley's good at blender and somehow I have a piece of paper that says I know basic AutoCAD when I used to work in a engineering firm.

I'm just waiting for someone to think they can get away with printing a plastic pistol, and then have it blow up on them...if it hasn't happened already.

Yep, already happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xjlqMw8FYE

I published a few of my simple designs on Thingiverse and you are welcome to print any of them: http://www.thingiverse.com/beamtech/designs

That looked like a 9mm. The idiocy required to think that you could us a plastic barrel...
I was more thinking people would try it with a .22, but never assume there is a limit on someone's stupidity...

Thanks!
I love the glow-in-the-dark eq6 handle! I think I'll order some glow filament too.

Just make sure you order the ABS variety because PLA is too brittle for this.

This would probably be alright in PLA at 100% infill but I agree ABS is better, if you can print it - which I can't :(

One reason I bought the Da Vinci 1.0A is it was ABS only at the time and if making a multi part project superglue or acetone sticks it together Also stronger and more UV resistant than PLA. I also made the cartridge resetter to avoid using their costly filament. Not impressed with the Da Vinci Jr as its to small for my use. I have since added a PLA printer. Came as a kit for $290ish and easy to put together and run.:D
Very useful and I just found a print on Thingiverse I will make later ...an adaptor so I can use my smartphone as a camera on the scope.

Yes but you would not want to expose it to the summer Sun as PLA starts to soften at 60 degrees C. Printing ABS is easy once you learn how to make the first layer stick properly to the platform.

I built my ow 3D printer.. and used it for FD -> EOS conversion of Canon FD 400mm f/2.8 L lens (among other things).

What to print? The only limit is your imagination (or lack of it)...

ETX & Nexstar?
The weak point of 3d printed guns is in the design, plastic is ok for the gun and longevity will be a concern depending on materials used to print with. Plastics have been used for years in various "real" guns. But you want a good reinforced design and ideally an injection molded plastic but just cram all the parts on a build platform without regard to the layer orientation.
Plus of course the 3d designs can be machined in metal too and how much use do you need from the gun anyway?
I've been doing 3D modelling since the mid 80's so I've printed a bunch of my old models, I also got all the imaging data from my stroke and turned it into models of my head, skull and brain.... just because i could. Plus i've designed various things to help with the physical disability I'm left with. And of course I've just downloaded and printed tons of stuff off thingiverse just for fun. A lot of which ended up as garden decorations or went into a toybox for visiting kids to enjoy playing with. I made a collar for a heavy telephoto zoom lens to hold it out at full zoom otherwise is creeps back in to wide angle when angled upwards. Also camera hotshoe clip to hold a laser pointer. Just think of hand stuff you can use, cable tidies or thing to help you find/secure eyepieces at your scope in the dark. Also there are glow in the dark filaments available depending on your printer so maybe tags and things to show where things are in the dark such as tripod feet so you know where to walk.
