Nice work Dave, I bought a 65 inch Panasonic recently, JB were over $1k cheaper than the nearest competitor. You will of course need a "proper" 4K player to go with it, there are only a couple on the market Samsung and Panasonic. The Panasonic is the ducks nuts but expensive at around $850. I stream on mine as well, couldn't see the logic in streaming things like Netflix but I'm a convert now. Lotof good HD and UHD stuff on Utube, if you're in to Foreigner search for the Foreigner Soundstage concert.

Re the tin can and string, we got FTTN NBN a couple of months ago, 25/5 connection works well despite the hype from the unbelievers. Hopefully it won't be too long in your area.

switched over to FTTH (via Optus) NBN and it's crap. I was on an Optus 30/1 cable which I loved - rock solid, and quoted speeds no matter what day or time of day I tested.

Optus does not have an equivalent 30/1 plan on their NBN fibre setup (this should be investigated by the ACCC as ISPs/RSPs should imho, be forced to offer equivalent plans) and I had 2 options:

1) 20/.5mb plan for the same price as my current Cable 30/1 plan

2) 50/2 plan for $20/month more than my current Cable 30/1 plan

now as I don't pirate like the majority of the Australian grubs do, I don't give 2 rats rear ends about upload speed.

So far, in just under 2 weeks of extensive testing, I've seen as low as 17/17 and the best I've seen is 43/18. It typically averages around the 30/17, which is no better than the old Cable connection as far as I'm concerned. For $20/month MORE.

This is bloody well criminal...

I've already had the new router's wifi signal die 3 times, never had this happen with the old router. I can't test the old cable router in the same location as Optus has already turned the Cable connection off.

So, OK, 30mb isn't too bad, certainly much better than what I had on crappy ADSL2+ years ago. But seriously, I'm paying $20/month more for the same speeds as before. And newsflash, speeds will ONLY get worse as time goes on as more people get switched onto the NBN network. ISP/RSPs backhauls aren't guaranteed and the government doesn't seem interested in mandating minimum backhaul limits per 1000 customers to help guarantee speeds. So, in the interests of greed, ISP/RSPs will buy as little backhaul as possible and cram as many people onto it, meaning contention ratios will be CRAP and user experience terrible.

There's a reason why Australia has One of the worst Internet performances in the Western world, and in fact, far worse than many 2nd and 3rd world countries!

One very unhappy NBN customer.

I'm to the point where I might ask Optus to terminate my connection under the 30 day grace period as it doesn't perform as expected, or within reason. Averaging 30mbps on a supposed 50mbps connection is not good. And if you think that is good, you need your head checked. I could then try NBN products from other providers in the hope of finding One that spends money on backhaul and provides decent connections. I say "in the hope" because having worked in the industry for a good 8 years, this is not what happens from what I've seen. Pretty much all companies scrounge on backhaul and offer crap contention ratios for rip off prices.

Hell, my friends in the UK are on a 100/5 connection for AUD $120/month unlimited data and get those speeds no matter what time of day or night. Once again it seems our friends across the Tasman (NZ) outperform Australia too ;-)
