Trapezium – nailed with the x5 Powermate!

Hi

I had a great night/morning with the SBIG ST7E, imaging Theta 1 Orion, better known as the Trapezium. The seeing was quite breathtaking at times, making up for the clouds that kept drifting across.

Here is a “process” composite that shows how the raw frames can be transformed using various image processing tools. It truly was a magical night; a night to remember. I hope that the DMK fiends were out and about, gathering images of Saturn.

Nicely done and interesting to see it up so close. It looks nice and sharp for using a x5 ! Wow.

I wonder... is it right here in the centre that HST (I think) took shots and spied the formation of new stars? I wonder if you're at the kind of resultion where if you had a binning chip or could somehow overcome the blooming of the ST7 (blooming which I am oh so familiar with), you could get good gas cloud detail at that magnification? Just thoughts ... it would be a interesting challenge.

I noted you used Maxim DL - I've been considering getting a copy and getting away from using Photoshop for post processing - is it worth the cost?

Hi Dan

I’ve ended up with quite a range of image processing software and as a result, have only explored minor pieces of functionality in each one, so I cannot really comment on the full functionality of the various packages.


I use CCDSoft to operate the ST7E ccd camera and acquire images.
MIRA AP is used to subtract Dark Frames, apply Flat Fields then Register and Combine the images.
I have only occasionally used Maxim DL for its deconvolution and star bloat tools.

I think Maxim DL is highly regarded, but quite expensive and they have a rather draconian policy of software updates IMO. I obtained a discounted copy with a US $50 off voucher when I acquired my ST7E 2nd hand.

Sorry I could not be of more help. Maybe a Maxim DL power user can respond to your question?
