The 12" parks is 'Homer', one of the kids stuck a Homer sticker on the base, and the name stuck as well.
I've called the gs lots of names.

I used to think of my scope as being a woman.....but as it can only do one thing at a time, I am reliably informed by my wife that it must be a bloke....which would also be consistent with the fact that it has three legs (one leg is very much longer than what is usual in its homo sapiens cousin).

Also, the fact that astronomers boast that their scope's "aperture" is bigger than someone else's also lends weight to scopes being male.

I'm with Ken, I call it the scope. If there is any ambiguity, because I have a smaller scope, I call it the "big scope". Pretty lame, huh? But it works amazingly well! Personifying inanimate objects is probably not one of the signs of good mental health. :P

Anthropomorphism is kinda tacky for scientists unless the darned thing is made of brass and has rivets up the side.
Then it's Bertha or Martha with maybe a qualifier. Big Bertha....
If I call mine anything it is jeezus. Usually when I hit my head on it.

I used to have a 10" & 8" LX200 which I called R2 & D2.
Used to have an ED100 Pro with the gold speckle tube which I called GoldenEye in homage to 007.
My Sky Rover is simple called "Rover".
My Tak I simple call Tak in reference to being as sharp as a Tak ;)

I haven't got around to names yet.
But I have a skinny little 80x400 refractor mounted on a chunky 150x750 Newtonian, so perhaps they could be Kermit and Miss Piggy?...
Or maybe Luke Skywatcher and Princess Mirra?...

This is a great thread and I was wondering why I never saw it before. Then I found that Col has resurrected a 12 year old thread! We should rename him 'Lazarus'!
I haven't named any of my scopes but it might be fun to come up with one. In recent years appropriate names have included 'rusty', 'dusty' and 'paperweight' but I've been getting some clear skies recently so that is changing. I'll put on my thinking cap.
BTW a friend had a large (for its day) dobs which he painted red and called 'Antares'.

Eddy (ED80), now sold.
Orange roughy (C8, orange tube), now sold.
Big Bertha (10" f4 SN) current
WO FLT 110 is currently un-named, thinking it's either a Willie or Goldie (for the gold trim finish)
Maybe I can start a poll

Peter of SDM likes to have names for his creations, and I had intended my 20" to be titled simply 'Deep' but just a month before it was due for delivery in 2014 we had announcements re 'Laniakea' - so that was added to the name; with its meaning of 'immense heavens' and its association with the Great Attractor, and especially with its reminder of huge universe-shaping forces, it was ultra-appealing.

The Russian Tank... well it's Russian, and about the size of a hot water heater... and typical of Russian technology the bits that matter are well made, but the rest is rather agricultural.

My LX200 12" is called "Hedgehog" because one night soon after purchase I was on a Greek island with my fiancé and we rescued two baby hedgehogs (so cute) from the road and into the bushes after cuddles (with the baby hedgehogs) and together with a naked eye Andremda Galaxy and the northern sky it was a memorable night.
My TOA I call "Old Light". Hardly needs an explanation...

Hi,
The C9.25 OTA I had a while back was called 'Ay-jo', as named by my then 3yo boy. I asked what it meant, he said 'dadda, it's Ay-jo, it doesn't mean anything because it's just Ay-jo'. Btw, he also named its finderscope Ay-Pee.
So when the N11 arrived, without hesitation he called it Ajo-poco!
We love our boys' creativity with naming stuff..
..like our house being called Nu-Jah 2, the recent holiday accommodation house and hire car being called Eff-Oh and Oaf, his toy giraffe Poss-O, our fridge Commie, the zebra in a picture on our wall Muz and the always elusive ever changing imaginary object he speaks about often Ay-Da-Boor!
Back on topic, my other 'scope names as per my signature below -um not so creative lol.
Regards, Dean
