Looks like CCD manufacturers are jumping on the larger CMOS bandwagon.
QHY have announced a full frame CMOS camera using the SONY CMOS chip that is used in the Nikon D810A, low noise, 4.88 micron pixels, 36Mb. May only be available as OSC though unless they are going to debayer the chip themselves.
QHY will also announce an APS-C version next week, my guess the same as the new ZWO-IMX071 (OSC only) that is in Beta testing on Cloudy Nights at the moment.

Oh that is a lovely sensor from what I've seen! May just have to apply to beta test that one!

Nikon D810A costs between $4.5-5k AUD. I assume that a cooled dedicated astro camera with the same chip that would be manufactured in smaller quantities will be more pricey, maybe about a $6k mark? So $6k for a cooled dslr....hmmm Of course it is all just a speculation, but such camera is quite unlikely to become as popular as the most recent fantastically priced camera with CMOS chip. Unless QHY will make a mono version of this full frame sensor that is.

Dr Qui is going to approach Nikon and see if he can get access to their full frame CMOS mono chip used in this Nikon Microscope camera.

that would be a great camera - but would need to be a bit less dollary than the $20k+ Nikon version:thumbsup:

The microscope camera comes with a suite of capture / processing software included, lets hope that is the bulk of their $20K price. All depends on the price Nikon want to sell the chip in quantity.

Can't imagine that selling to the astro community is of sufficient quantity that lower the price ;)

Your probably right Dunk, plus Nikon's core business is selling cameras not chips.
However if QHY, ZWO, QSI etc could form a buying cooperative and guarantee some 5 year volume maybe Nikon could be swayed.

Only about 40%QE in red, does not look like a benchmark for astroimaging IMO...

I thought I would mention the new APS-C CMOS OSC is called the QHY247C, it is 24Mp, 3.9micron pixels, 14bit. Same chip as used in the Nikon D5300.

QHY and ZWO seem to be moving in the market in lockstep. ZWO have already released their APS-C OSC camera to CN beta tester (ie Tolga). The chip being the Sony IMX071 i believe.

I couldn't find the part No. for the chip in the Nikon D5300, but one website said they used a Toshiba CMOS chip.
EDIT: OK it seems the D5200 uses the Toshiba chip, and the D5300 uses a Sony IMX193 according to this website
