Good luck with your quest, but as discussed here fairly recently it may not be that easy to find a copy ....

I recall back in 1969 when I was a cadet engineer in Sydney haunting the various second hand bookshops in George St, Sydney. Hartung's "Astronomical Objects" must have been in the window of one of the bookshops for a couple of months at least but at a cost of $6.75 it made a fair dent in my $30 a week pay packet. I gave in to temptation and can honestly say it is the most memorable and satisfying book purchases I have ever made. It has been used on countless occasions, lent out to various fellow amateur astronomers over the years yet is still in quite excellent condition. I bought the 2nd Edition in 1995 from Melbourne University Press at a far greater cost of course and while it is a great book it did not evoke the same feeling I had for the 1st Edition. These days both books sit in the bookshelf except when I read this thread, now it is time to re-acquaint myself with a couple of old friends.

A word of advice, cover your books with a good quality plastic sleeve/dust jacket in the first instance, it will keep them in perfect condition for many years. I have attached some scanned pages of the 1st Ed for people who may be interested.

I love this book. I lugged a copy of the hardback edition back from Australia to the UK in 1997, well worth it.

The book is available through Amazon Books in the US.

I have just taken delivery of my copy - absolutely superb. Cost was around $170.00 Aust.

Even smells like a 'proper' book!!

I was in South Africa in the 1970's when I heard about Hartung's book. I was lucky enough to be able to contact him and request his help to find a copy; he did better than that, he sent me one of his copies which he had annotated with corrections.... certainly a wonderful piece of work.... will always be in the library.....
Unfortunately by the time I came to Oz, he had died and the bushfires wiped out the observatory; I did go up to Lavender Farm just to see..............
