Impressed by M&T's great image of the Seven Samurai area of the SMC, I decided to have a go at a quick one night grab to see what I could capture of this fairly faint area.

Image consists of 14x300sec Ha and 14x300sec Oiii, bicoloured in Photoshop. Camera is the ASi1600MM-C, shot through my TS Photoline 115mm/f7 APO.

Thumbnail below suffers from the downsizing. Obviously more data would be preferred, but I have a short attention span.

nice one Glen, how are you finding the 115? I was contemplating the same/similar thing.

image seems to have a bit of a yellowy / greeny hue/gradient throughout it - well on the monitor I'm on currently anyway.

cheers

Bravo!

Your wider field of view has captured not just seven samurai but at least a dozen ninja.

Nice framing, too - pleasantly balanced.

Best,
M & T

Thanks Greg, I am enjoying the 115 but finding it a bit slow at native f7 as in this image (I do have the corrector/reducer to f5.5 as well ), as I am used to doing everything at f5. Just a learning curve issue I am sure. I will adapt.

As to the colour hue gradient your seeing, it is not due to the scope colour handling, I acknowledge I probably 'pushed' the data to hard. The combination of the faint targets (about 13+ mag i think) and the relatively skinny data in narrowband, has meant that I tend to over-process what data I have, a common problem with fast narrowband. If you look at the histogram on the Astrobin tech page you can see just how little data there actually is to work with.

Thanks M&T, and yeah there is heaps of interesting objects in that area. And you are right about the significance of Oiii in that area. My Oiii subs looked much better than the Ha. I'd like to get back there with one of my larger f5 scopes.;)

Very nice framing of a magnificent area of the sky.
Sometimes I wish I wasn't quite so far North.....

Cheers,
Tim

Wow
I see 7 objects there with a 12" Dob and a UHC filter.

That's a great result. It's an engaging photo, but the green cast is a bit strong. But given it's a 'quick grab', some little lack of perfection can be excused :-)
Definitely worth a look at the HiRes version.
