Hi

http://www.astrobin.com/full/268402/0/

have been trying for years to get something on this beautiful object and finally got just enough data to put together an image. combined ca2015 Ha using a H694 camera with ca2016 O3 using an ASI1600 camera. ~3.5 hours Ha and ~4 hours O3, all with 300s subs. Due to a paucity of data, needed a lot of noise reduction, but even so, was very pleased to be able to see a little of the outer oxygen halo. Thanks for looking. regards ray

Looks good Ray, the shock fronts are showing up nicely especially the fainter OIII at the very bottom of the frame.
On the left side of NGC6164 there is a patch of deep red that has a sharp cut off. Is that natural or an artefact of the two sensors?

Hi Ray,
That is a gorgeous image!

Very well done.
I love the colours and depth.
Cheers,

Ray... I can only find one aspect of this image worthy of criticism, and to be fair, it is a subjective quibble.

That being; you have spent time imaging something other than a galaxy.
(forgive my prejudice if you will)

I'm curious to know how you rate the ASI1600 against the SXH694?

Welcome to the "two camera club!" Great shot. I really love the rich hue. The image pops.

thanks Colin. That linear feature seems to be present in other images of the region - I think it is real.

thanks Tim - appreciated

:lol:Sometimes the sky is just not dark enough for galaxies Clive - that's the excuse anyway. The cameras are both very good. The 694 is a perfect match for my scope in normal seeing conditions and has a high QE. The 1600 has lots more pixels and has amazingly low read noise - allowing short subs. Still haven't worked out which one to keep - maybe both...

thanks a lot Marcus!

thanks M&T. it was nice to get something in the outer ring, but more data would help - weather just did not oblige though.

thanks Mike. have been hanging off hoping to get more data on a whole bunch of stuff, but finally realised that it wasn't going to happen this year - so, process what I have

thanks very much Bob - nice object isn't it

Thanks Peter. and thanks to PI - don't know how anything else could have put together an image out of such diverse data.

Terrific stuff Ray! One of the best shots of this thing I've seen. The quality of NGC 6164 images seems to have moved up a notch or two in the last few years.

Cheers

awesome stuff Ray!
as you can see by my profile pic it is a bit of a fav of mine!
unfortunately i couldn't get to it (or really anything else) with the 694 chip this season.
from memory yours, mikes, Ricks (captain o3!) and suavi's are all top notch.

cheers

that's very generous - thanks Steve.

thanks very much Russ. I think Rick set the bar too high for us mere mortals with his last image, but it is still nice to have one of my own :).

An excellent rendition, Ray! That Oiii is very dim and you've dug up an amazing amount of it
