I've always been vaguely uncomfortable at not fully understanding the way earth moves around the sun and galaxy. Stumbled across this great little video today.

I think I understand better now?

Thanks Rob, that clears it up !

We are also part of the Laniakea Super Cluster in which we are moving to the Great Attractor as stated - but I wonder what motion Laniakea has to add to our travel path ? does it rotate and move relative to the centre of the Universe (or maybe the origin of the Big Bang) where ever that may be !

Then there is the cosmic/metric expansion - movement but relative to what ?

It was probably the spiral path of the earth through space when including galactic rotation that initially blew my mind, but agreed it all depends on your frame of reference.

I still get very annoyed when people ask me if a galalxy or neb picture is in our solar system. Plenty of room to help educate people on our place in it all.

Even worse when the movies cant even get it right. Perpetuates ignorance when a little effort could get the terminology right and educate the populace... just a weee bit!

If all reasonsble ability to explain exists, we can always -as history has shown in perptuity - attribute responsibility to a mythical deity (insert deity of choice). When science can adequately explain, then attribution will be adjusted accordingly.

Now that I have opened a can of flesh eating archaia, I shall remain silent in fear of Eris' disharmony... :)
