Hi to all

NGC 1291 is a nice bright galaxy in Eridanus that I've never imaged before and you don't see too many images of it. There is a fair bit of subtle detail in this one but it's not a colorful galaxy. Conditions were the usual mix of good and bad but given the recent weather I was glad to get something.

Cheers

Steve

Nice capture, especially from suburban Canberra Steve, the subtle features are showing nicely. Another one I was considering shooting myself

Very cool galaxy

That is a really interesting galaxy Steve, the outer galactic halo would suggest that it has potentially had a recent merger with the small smudge at 5oclock, potentially an irregular dwarf galaxy.

Very nicely done indeed Steve! Love the subtle structure in the core.

Thanks Marcus. It was a battle to bring that structure out.

Thanks Colin. It certainly looks that way although in my limited consultation of the literature I couldn't see anything.

Thanks Mike. Actually I had a feeling that you already had done it and was looking for it on your website yesterday. Must have dreamed it.

Thanks Bob. Of course if you have a look at the CHART32 version it blows my image away. Of course it's from an 80cm scope on a mountain in Chile.

That's a very nice image, Steve, with lots of subtle details.

Weather! What a pain it's been!

The capture is very nice Steve. Really good detail. Quite a few faint fuzzies lurking in the background. I found that is possible to tweak it to bring out a bit more structure in the ring and core. I used LHE in PixInsight but I imagine this will be possible in other applications as well.
Stars are great--small, round and colourful

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. Geoff, I'll have a look at LHE in Pixinsight. Never used it before although I use PI for some things.

Just use with caution--it's a tool that is very easy to overuse.

A very nice image Steve. I've wanted to reimage this one myself. I quite like those types of galaxies.

That's quite inspiring, Steve. Makes us want to have a go. Interesting subtle dust lanes in the inner galaxy. A few very distant friends, too.

Thanks M&T. I'm sure you would produce a great result.

Thanks Greg. Just went looking for it on your website and couldn't find it.

Thanks Pete. I'm going to release a somewhat improved version probably later today. If you want to see an absolutely jaw dropping picture check out the CHART32 version:

Of course these guys have considerable instrument and location advantages
