This time, its dicovery has seen me spend half a day and night with the crew from SBS's The Feed (http://www.sbs.com.au/news/thefeed) yesterday, filming a piece for a special on "Citizen Science" that is slotted to run on their Mon 3 October episode. The idea is to present people who have normal day jobs but do science activities in their spare time, so there will be footage at my place of work and out at my observatory, I did an extensive interview, heaps of filming and some great footage from my observatory inside and out...so, if you haven't got anything else to do that day, mark it in your calendar and tune in to SBS The Feed, even if just for a laugh....you may even get to hear me sing under the stars :face: :scared: :P

A great result, but ehhhh, please post a reminder to this thread closer to the airing date. I can't remember anything past a few hours of being told something. But it makes me awesome at keeping secrets!
All the best,

Good on you Mike. I hope they don't be to hard on the edit.
I for one am looking forward to your song.
Anyways old news. Your public await something new. Have you discovered anything new lately.
You are only as good as your last discovery.
Seriously I am so happy for you.
I tell folk about your discovery. They don't believe it at first which says a lot for your feat.
I hope I get to see it.
Fantastic.

Cheers Simon, Dunk and Alex :)
All a bit of good fun I recon and from what they gathered while with me, it won't just be about the story of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy I helped bring to light but rather the whole idea of what we do in our game. Hopefully it will provide some interest and entertainment to a few people and let's face it, it could have been any number of us on here featured and many even better examples of Citizen Science going on... but I guess in this instance my colourful and unusual past also helps, as it gives it a different angle and injects some quirky extra interest.
Just mark it on your calendars...if you miss it and I get discovered..?.. ala Paul Potts ....weeeell...don't blame me!
Mike
funny and interesting adventures around your galaxy find! :D
25 years ago yesterday, Ötzi, the 5250 yr old ice mummy , was found by a German couple Helmut and Erika Simon.
It was 19 years later, after a long debate before court, that they got awarded their finder's fee of €175.000, 55.000 of which were lawyers' fees.
Helmut Simon was already dead by then.
Even rumours of a Curse of the Ice Mummy have blossomed - you know, like Tut Ankh Amun and those inexplicable deaths of people who found that grave in Egypt?
Apparently, 9 people involved with the find or examination of Otzi have died ...Including Helmut Simon
You should be relieved that you found a galaxy and not a mummy even though you probably don't get a finder's fee.

Glad it was a bit of fun to watch guys :) I thought The Producer Una Butorac did a very nice job in the end condensing hours of footage into 6.5min, the mix and sentiment of the piece was spot on really and Pete the camera man did a fabulous job too, setting up timelapses, dealing with the crazy varied lighting etc and was all done on the trot, very professionally capable that's for sure, must have been just as challenging or more so out on the water at Narooma with Georgia.
As for the singing..?..well, t'was only s snippet (with no beer and no warmup :P) Una tweeted a longer version after the show went to air though
Who know's what will be next..... :)

This is the sort of thing that getting media attention can do...being a bit of an ambassador for young people to think about astronomy and space is a fabulous feeling, even better than when I was able to demonstrate, to thousands of kids who watched my strongman exploits over the years, that amazing feats of strength are possible without performance enhancing drugs, just hard work and tenacity can produce the goods.

So can we expect to see you on the voice?
I can see the act...singing to a pretty Lady as you hold her above your head.
You may want to put the idea to one side but such an appearance could give opportunity for promotion...she would need to be holding a scope maybe.
It is great to see you give such a good example to folk.

Thanks but you need to be holding that pretty lady up to make it work. I don't know if you are any good or not but the type of person you are suggests you are probably singing well.
What do folk who know think?

Nice one.
And the 15-year old girl is sort of your younger want-a-telescope-peeping-tom self.
what I think? the voice is created nicely with intuitive sound forming talent.
but I couldn't quite make out a distinct melody.... .... ...

Well done Mikey, you big media tart  Congrats, mate. Hopefully, you'll encourage a few more young folk, or even older ones, to have a go at astronomy
Watched the other night with great interest. How many degrees of separation is it when you belong to the same forum as a famous person?
"that amazing feats of strength are possible without performance enhancing drugs,"
And what’s this about not using performance enhancing drugs? You quite openly confess your love of beer as do I. Oh sorry you were talking about your sporting career, not the singing.
Seriously though. Well done Mike. Would love to have seen more. You have proven to many amateur amateurs (beginners) here such as myself that amazing discoveries can be made by anyone with a bit of dedication and a love of something.

Mmmmm taaaart....(Homer Simpson) :2thumbs:
Cheers Brendon  thanks for the nice words, glad you enjoyed the piece and yes indeed, in small to modest quantities, beer is certainly a performance enhancer, kinda loosens one up a tad... but after that, there can be a significant drop in performance if one is not careful ... Nusing Doormaeee hic!.....:drink:
