More than 800 PGC galaxies in a 2.5x2.5 degree FOV around the Grus Quartet: http://www.astrobin.com/full/258595/0/

I don't think I've seen a field quite this chokkers before.

Data captured at Astrofest. Hope to have it processed in a few days...

Cheers,
Rick.

Hi Rick,

This is quite an interesting picture - I am looking forward to the final processed image.

What was the setup & exposure details?

Cheers,
Mark

Thanks, Mark. I used an AP140EDF scope on AP900 mount with an Apogee U16M camera. I have 6 hours of lum (600 sec subs) and 3.5+3+3 hours of RGB (900 sec subs.)

Cheers,
Rick.

Funny... I have reasonable skies out at Wallaroo and I have imaged that field myself...but I can't for the life of me make out any of those little blue circles in my data  :P

Seriously, yeah there are so many galaxies in that area of sky, so in such a huuge field you are like a galaxy trawler fisherman

You need an "annotation" filter as well as LRGB, Mike. I can sell you one cheap

OMG - Am I allowed to say that at 58yrs old? Seriously stunning and useful OMG, OMG.

When you said "Grus" I could hear the song.
Looking forward to the final. T-shirt(s) coming your way.

Nice teaser! I reckon you may have caught some galaxies not in the PGC catalogue too!

Of course you can :) Thanks, Peter.

I'm saving the AF in joke for the RGB image ;)

Ta, Geoff.

I think so, Troy. Also the thing I thought was a reflection appears to be PGC70787.

Magic PixIe dust, Mikey

I knew there were a lot of galaxies around there but not that many

Cheers

That is going to look really good once you've finished Rick, probably the most galaxies ever captured in one frame (excluding NASA).

Cheers

Yeah, an image with the AP140. I was wondering about that recently. Great to see it in use with its super sharp optics.

A wonderful widefield. The version displayed is annotated. Is there one without that?

Greg.

Serious number of smudges in that field Rick!!

I was surprised too, Steve.

Thanks, Bill. It's not quite Hubble Deep Field but slightly reminiscent of it.

That's just a single 15 minute blue sub with annotation, Greg, and all I've uploaded so far. Once I finish processing I'll post the full field in LRGB. Lovely scope BTW

Indeed, thanks Colin!

That is going to be impressive to see the finished image.

I hope so, Peter. Trying to avoid the anticlimactic crap RGB version

That is amazing. Never realised there were this many galaxies visible in a single field (within reach of amateur instruments at least).

You'll never ever look at that constellation again without having ELO playing in your head.
You're welcome. :)

I can't wait to see the finished image Rick. :)

It's nice to go wide sometimes, Pete

Thanks, JJJ. I'm keen to finish it too, but I spent most of the day and night catching up with work  Looking forward to processing on the Ekka holiday.
