These mongrels get me concerned. This low pressure is about to hit in the next few hours. Winds predicted around 90kmh and huge falls of rain. Always a mix for disaster in these parts.
See the images below for cloud and rain coming our way in SA

going to be a clear patch this evening though  - also plenty of wind to make life interesting. Will have to be careful that the obs roof is bolted down before the next front hits, but am happy that there might finally be a bit of sky up there. I have been trying for 2 years to get data on a couple of targets that come around this time of year - might just be able to finish one of them if we get a few clear hours.

It was supposed to hit Melbourne but seems to have run out of puff....

Things seem to be going ok so far. The low has a well developed central region now. Lots of wind this morning with some good gusts but no real damage. The real nuts and bolts of the low is yet to cross the coast. Looks like heavy falls are due in the next few days.
Yes Ray it looks like you will get some clear sky but no one else will. :)

Nicely predicted Ray. Imaging right now, but it is a bit windy for the big scope even in the dome.
The "APO straw" is wind resistant.
Good luck getting the data.

thanks very much Paul - yep got some colour data. The seeing was >3" FWHM for much of the time and a few subs were wind affected, but at least there was some sky :).
Cloud Free Nights is great for cloud prediction - seems to get it right most of the time, even the pesky local cloud.

It look like it is turning south east of you on this morning's sat photos.

I headed North to near Devonport on Tuesday and got caught 50km out. Horizontal hail is something I have not seen before and the foliage coming across the highway was pretty spectacular. I was blacked out Tuesday and Wednesday and snowed out of the south until Thursday morning. Made a dash for home and started picking up my carport on Thursday night. To tired to have my first shower in 3 days so I crashed. A tree decided to follow suit at 5:30 this morning during a new gale and took out the power lines.... more wind damage. No pumps, no water... NO COFFEEEE :eyepop: Got power back via a by-pass this afternoon.
Poor bloody sparkies looked like they had not slept for a week.
This was not fun!

Gee sorry to hear that Rom, a generator might be a good investment.
