I have inherited what appears to be a Royal Astro 4 inch reflector from my late father, who bought it during the 1960s. It has been used very rarely and has spent most of its life in the cardboard box in which it was purchased. I would be grateful for any comments, opinions, advice, etc. from members.

I've seen these before. It's probably not a bad scope and being f/10 it's pretty forgiving of minor imperfections. I expect it will need some TLC, especially cleaning of the optics and a collimation, probably also check the movement of the mount. What eyepieces do you have and what size eyepieces does it take?

BTW welcome to IIS. Enjoy your stay.

Thanks David. It has a 6mm, 12.5mm, and 25mm eyepiece, an a 2x Barlow lens. Cheers, Andrew

A nicely made telescope as you'd expect from the maker a nice bit of family heritage to hand down to the kids when they are old enough to appreciate it. What are the coatings on the mirrors like?, if your wondering value I'd say not a lot, worth more to you than anyone else.

It seems quite well made. I am reluctant to start pulling the scope apart, so cannot comment on the condition of the mirrors.

Andrew , look down the tube from the front opening - is the mirrorat the bottom dull and dusty looking or bright and shiny . Looking through the focus tube where the eyepiece goes in - are the mirrors bright and clear or do you see spots and dust .

Looks pretty clear and bright to me! The telescope has rarely been out of its box for the past 40+ years, which probably helps.
