NGC7822 aka SH2-171 or, if you prefer Cederblad 214, is an emission nebula found at the border of Cepheus and Cassiopeia. The usual story of hot, new stars carving out pillars of dust and gas :)

Data was provided by Paddy Gilliland as a north vs south swap and processed by me in PixInsight. Approx 30 hours of SHO data captured with a Borg 125 scope and QSI683 camera and Astrodon 3nm filters.

My favourite crop: http://www.astrobin.com/full/252573/B/
Full field: http://www.astrobin.com/252573/0/

Hope you enjoy it. Feel free to point out any processing flaws

Cheers,
Rick.

Thanks, Colin & Houghy. The northerners have some good stuff too :)

Reminiscent of the Dementers from Harry Potter, those black dust clouds are pretty amazing.
Very busy field though, the eye doesn't seem to have a central point of interest/focus to rest on.
I'm only on my iphone but here the colours and detail look amazing!

Thanks, Peter! I resisted the temptation to take out all the green and after a few days sitting on it I think it was a good choice.

Thanks, Andy. There is certainly a lot going on especially with all the dark nebulosity.

Edit: The widefield version on Astrobin looks great!
Would you condider rotating it 90* clockwise for balance?

I did rotate the crop and it does work well with the full FOV too, thanks Andy.

Ahhh! Nice.
Like multiple versions of the pillars of creation all wound together in a single image.

Thanks, Rodney. It's a very interesting and detail rich object.

Thanks, Marcus. I'm slowly learning not to hammer the colour into complete submission :)

Beautifully processed. Processing flaws??? You are the master. I think a lot would agree that you are the best image processor on this site.

Just as a question as I have calibrated a new monitor and as a check, is the top right hand corner a fairly bright deep red in your final image? The edge of the nebula is a glowing golden colour, not super bright but reasonably bright? The a sea of medium blue? My laptop even with calibration is badly blue biased. So the calibrated monitor is probably very accurate (I checked with some regular photos) but its still so different I need to check.

Greg.

Thanks, Paul.

But you'd ace it, Mikey

Very much a matter of opinion, Greg. Nice of you to say so but I feel like I still have a lot to learn.

The full FOV version of the image matches your description. Deep red with a little orange at the top right, the central blues are a little cyan and deeper blues further left till you get near the left edge which has some milkier blues.
