I need guidance to get a phone at the new place.
I need a land line and internet.
I am about 20 klms East of Tabulam.
I have not had a phone for about 15 years.
What do I do..who do I get? Do it need satelite for internet?
Any help very much appreciated?
Good news found site for observatory its a killer. Top of a nice hill with trees so sheltered a few will go but nice grass. I only saw it missed it when I looked before buying.
Also previous owner left timber and rock and sand pile, old windows so if I can get up here for good I will build something bad legs and all.

I would first tell you to give Optus, Telstra, and the NBN a phone call... but that would be rather cheeky I suppose...;)
On the serious side, it is as simple as that, get in contact with the major players in the area. Most will have shops in the local shopping hub. Since you will want Internet, I would stick with the big corporates only because it will be cheaper in the long run. Bundling has been big business in the last few years.
I'm with Optus on NBN FTTP (Fibre to the Premise) and pay $80/mo for unlimited phone calls and SMS to 30 different countries and of course Australia. I also have unlimited Internet usage for streaming TV or Netflix (not really unlimited, but so generous it cannot possibly be used up in one month).
Your location may limit you to NBN wireless, or piss poor ADSL from the major operators. Wireless is not a bad solution, it is a point to point type solution, they put a directional antenna on the side of the house.
That's about all I can add... good luck with your investigation!

I'd suggest making inquiries with Telstra to see if you can get a landline set up & make sure the exchange has broadband internet, then look for the best deal you don't have to go Telstra, I have a landline at my place but the internet won't go thru the exchange near me, it's too old & they won't update it, soooo I've gone satellite with TV(no reception) & internet, check out
www.nbnco.com.au (http://www.nbnco.com.au) 1800687626 to see if your eligible for sat internet, they set it up for free, I just have to pay for the provider each month.
www.mysattv.com.au (http://www.mysattv.com.au) & www.myvast.com.au (http://www.myvast.com.au) for TV, I had to buy a dish & set top box from jcar or like & they come out & set it up, free from then on.
Go for it!

Hope its not to painful Alex , took us over 3 months to get telstras contractor
to do a pretty simple pit out front in a new estate, and then had to get another contractor come out and stabilise the side of it as the dirt was
sink holing into the power pit ,to be fair they did come fix this in a week.

The nearest exchanges are in Tabulam and Mallangenee
http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/viewexchange.php?Exchange=TBLM
http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/viewexchange.php?Exchange=MLGE
Both have available ADSL2 ports.
I agree with the comment re: major providers. While they may be slow to initially connect, the service side of things would be very important due to your remoteness.

G'day Alex,
If you do not already have a copper connection to this site then no sense paying to build and maintain an old and vulnerable telecom access type.
I would recommend looking at the NBN satellite solution with an ISP of your choice.
In the long run, the satellite may only need to be a cost saving startup solution until the terrestrial NBN solutions are finally nailed down.
But first, I would recommend talking to the locals and see how they have faired with their research and selections.

Having a quick look on one of the NBN info sites, there is fixed wireless on both sides of you but possibly missing you (Taking a wild guess at where you might be) No idea at this point if that means there will be another tower build to fill the gap or if you would fall on the satellite service instead.

Hi There,
For terrestial copper (telephone) data connections; distance from the exchange is your "enemy".
Anything beyond 2 KM is getting problematic.
at 3 KM you are running out of options.
See this site: despite the age, the graph is still valid:
https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Home-Broadband/The-impact-of-distance-from-exchange-on-the-ADLS2-speed/td-p/164080
Beyond that, only wireless(i.e. mobile) or satellite, if either are in coverage, are the answer.

i agree with steve -if you don't already have a landline the setup & ongoing rental costs may outweigh benefits. check if you can get nbn wireless, we have that as well as mobiles [you can also rig a normal phone to the nun connection]
do you know what coverage is like i your area? where i am telstra is the only god option -so we use aldi mobile sin, cheaper than telstra plan but still good coverage

Thanks everyone for all the advice.
I have to return to Sydney for a short time but my daughter is getting it done...how not sure but she has a list thanks to all contributions from everyone. At least there is good Mobil service while we sort it out.
