Back in Feb I ordered a MESU 200 Mount from Amsterdam.

Lucas Mesu has now emailed me, saying he is ready to ship and needs to know what description to put on the invoice for customs declaration.

He sent me a link on CN discussing the same situation.

http://www.cloudynights.com/topic/533317-if-i-get-a-mesu-mount-200-what-would-be-missing/?hl=%2Bmesu+%2Bduties#entry7158450

I did have a look on our Customs website but found nothing regarding mounts.

Otherwise I can tell Lucas just describe it as a spare part for a telescope.

Any other suggestions?

Cheers
Bill

Oooh nice choice. Interesting mount that. I didn't realise mounts were exempt from duty when buying my Avalon, so that was a nice surprise.

Free of import duty, BUT you will still have to pay the GST on it (assuming that it is over $1000 which is a fairly safe bet!!)

Yes, the GST is payable on the total of the cost of mount+freight cost .

You're a legend Matt, thanks for the reference number which I will pass on to Lucas.

Clive I'm halfway through the video (bit of a shock).

Yes I knew about the GST, the mount including options I ordered and shipping and insurance to my door is Euro5,400, approx $8,300 before GST.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Bill

Why did you import it from Amsterdam / EU and not direct from China ?
Probably it is cheaper (as it is manufactured there) so you pay less import duty.

Skysurfer - The MESU 200 is manufactured by Lucas Mesu in Amsterdam, nothing to do with China.

The problem with the video is that is an underground video, if it was really accurate then Main Stream Media would have ran with it and belted the Politicians with awkward questions.

I don't have the time to research its accuracy, but if it is true then it is disgraceful.

... + any insurance as well.

It's the fact that GST is based on the total not just the amount over $1000 that gets me.

Oh well, I guess we'll add the tax department to those we'll put up against the wall when the revolution comes ...

Mike,
I am serious in suggesting that irrespective of where the truth lies, employment of logical fallacies (including an appeal to incredulity - which you just did) proves nothing...
They are in fact nothing more than a comforting form of self deception, and a lazy way to avoid the application of reason.

He he no worries, no harm intended, the video just seemed a bit far fetched to me. You know the old saying, "if it sounds like BS..?.. it probably is" or something like that ...kind of a variation of Occams Razzor

If goods are under $1000 then freight is NOT included and the shipment is GST free.

If goods are over $1000 then freight IS included and GST is payable on both.

In my work, I often import goods under $1000 with the total including freight exceeding $1000, I have never been charged GST on these shipments.
