The family and I went on a whale-watching cruise while we at Coffs Harbour for our recent holiday.
Having never seen the whales in their natural habitat before, it was very exciting. Unfortunately Kate gets motion sickness, and Abbey hated being on the boat too. So it wasn't an easy time.. made photography all the more difficult too, as I missed some opportunities.
I'm disappointed with how my photos turned out - I didn't think about what would be required and just used Program mode, with the 75-300mm lens (mostly at 300mm), auto-focus, with burst-fire mode on.
I got enough shots, but unfortunately the camera decided that 1/125s was all it needed, and with the rocking of the boat the fast movement of the whales, most of the shots turned out blurry - not due to focus, but due to motion blur.
I should've put the camera in full manual, and set the shutter to 1/300s minimum, and increased the ISO if the histogram looked too dark. So a lesson well learnt!
I enjoyed the experience of seeing the whales, but i'm very disappointed at my lack of thought into photographing them, and so i'm disappointed with the results.
There were no spectacular breaches or anything like that, a few tail shots and lots of humps. Only 1 of the tail shots was sharp - the rest suffer from motion blur due to the slow exposure. :(
To compensate for the poor tail shots, i've shrunk them down and made a mosaic with them.
