Here is a small two-panel mosaic of the Vela Supernova Remnant, just a small section of the much larger object. I sacrificed some angular resolution using 2x2 binning in an attempt to go really deep and capture some of those intricate but exceedingly faint wisps of light that makes this region so exciting to explore with a CCD camera.

Amazing pic! I've always loved the Vela SN remnant - all those whispy filaments :-). I wonder - how much deeper does the 2x2 binning allow you to go?

Murray that's great! The colour scheme works well for Ha/OIII. Fantastic depth and detail.
So we can see where your bit sits in the big picture, would you care to confess Ra / Dec of centre, FOV, which way is North?

Love that. My favourite southern hemisphere object and you've done it very well. 2x2 was a good choice as depth over a tiny improvement in detail is the win factor here.

Well, you never can tell when an image comes together and is a winner. Perhaps in six months from now I will review this image with a fresh mind and decide it was OK after all. Thanks for your positive comments.
I quickly used the plate solver script in PI to analyse one of the linear images used to construct the final colour image. These are the numbers it returned, which seem about right according to my printed star atlas.

Good work Murray. Colour is pleasing and detail is great. Two panels look good. I should add to my single panel. Thanks for the memory jog.

All's fair in narrowband colour, Murray, and you've picked a very attractive palette. Lovely detail as well. Overall a top image!

A fantastic aspect of the extended Vela SNR region is the intricate network of wispy OIII emissions that complement the H alpha emissions, but also stand alone as strong evocative features. For most gaseous nebulas, the OIII emission usually emanates from the bright, central region, with more of the interesting detail in the H alpha emissions.
The PI training course that Rick S gave on Easter Monday is helping me to lift my game, very slowly. Thanks for the encouraging comments.

Thank muchly, Murray. I can see where it is now. It amazes me how much shots of the Vela SNR can differ one to the next, yet still be the Vela SNR.

Beautiful Murray, I was working on a similar one myself recently but it was too late in the year to complete it.

Andy, I think you are posting some amazing images and I plan to try to emulate one of them. Once I have reproduced something similar using my own data, I will re-process the data using an experimental work flow and hopefully I will create a unique portrait. I doubt it will have the same wow-wee factor as your original image, but at least it gives me another goal to help extend myself.

There are a great many more experienced imagers here that we can all learn from and be inspired by - and I look forward to seeing more images from you using your new workflow :)
