Well after a few days of waiting, a package turned up today from Auburn in California which some may know as the town where Stellarvue are based. Inside is a nice shiny new Stellarvue SVR102T-IS refractor!!

This is a 4" apo refractor and is the upgraded version with a dedicated 0.8 reducer flattener and the 3" Feathertouch focuser. Has a carbon graphite body, comes in a very well made padded case, nice chunky tube rings. Only weighs in at 6.6kgs so should ride quite happily on the AZ/EQ mount.

Visually it is a beautiful thing to look at, all shiny and new. Should make an interesting visual scope apart from having the option of doing some good stuff on the imaging side of things. I have a motorised focus system on its way to get it properly setup for imaging.

Naturally, it's arrival coincides with the crappy weather.

:D

It surely looks like a beautiful telescope, congratulations Malcolm!

I have been thinking of one day upgrading my 4" ED doublet, and this particular telescope has been one of the top options. I will be looking forward to reading your impressions with this telescope as an imaging machine :)

Thanks Bo.
If you think it's bad in Melbourne, you should see it in Colac!!

I've always wondered whether SV's claims that their scopes are made in USA are actually made in the USA?

My reason is that most of the OTAs do look like those made by those Chinese factories like Kunming Optics and that SV themselves actually put in their extra 100cents worth to pimp up and quality-control the OTAs up to their (SV's) high standards because the price differential is quite a big gap.

Have noted too that similar OTAs are being sold by Teleskop Service and much cheaper costs.

Just thinking aloud and not casting any aspersions on anyone's reputation nor integrity.

So if anyone do know the facts would be pleased to hear how the scenario is in this regard.

BTW Malcolm nice looking OTA (new toy) as is with all the SV models that they sell.

I am not actually that interested in where the bits are made or assembled. What I am interested in is the quality and getting a product that does what I want. Sure there are other makes that may be better, but I have to live in a budget.

I spoke to some people and they helped with my decision. So far ( and it is early days!) I am rapt with this purchase.:D

Anyways thanks to everyone for their positive comments!!:thanx:

The scope is outside at the moment chugging away collecting data for my first serious image with a premium scope and a CCD so we will see what happens tonight!!

Cheers

Thanks Andy
It was seeing your results that moved me to check them out. I figured that if they were going to go to the trouble of making their 70mm scopes so well, then the trouble they would go to for their bigger brothers would make it worthwhile.

Also SV is a little less well known here in OZ than some other brands of decent refractors, so nice to have something a little bit different!
