Horsey and Flame

Hi Guys,

Took a few shots at the horsehead/flame last week. Finally got sometime over the weekend to process it. Taken from the 8" F/4 unmodded 350d. guided with ed80 DSI 2.

6 x 5 minutes at ISO 400
5 x 6 minutes at ISO 400

Hi Eric, That certainly is a fantastic image. There's lots of detail to be seen in that shot and the colours really do it justice.
I can see why it is such a great region to image.

Wow, the definition of the Horsehead Nebula is incredible.

Seeing as your camera is unmodified, have you upped the red channel selectively in post-processing or was it because of the length of exposures that you did actually pick up the red like that?

I've been having difficulty getting the red.

Very nice. I love the smooth subtle colours. Shame about the small amount of trailing, it's small enough you might be able to use a star-rounding plugin to fix.

Hi Octane, I use Gradient Xterminator to balance my colours first since it is unmodded before any post processing. this will lower the green/blue channel evenly.

Just curious, are you running any sort of noise reduction on this in PP or do you use in-camera n/r?

I use plugins for photoshop... I can't remember the exact web address, they appear in the photoshop filters menu under "AstroPlugins", this one being "Star Rounder".

It sometimes works well and other times it's better without it. Most of the time the successfulness depends on the amount of noise because when it corrects for the oblong stars the circular noise becomes oblong. So if you have little or no noise, it looks great, otherwise the noise becomes streeks :)

There's 12 filters set, I have zipped the star rounder one and attached it, all up they were 900k zipped. The website for them should be easy to find..

Hi Ezy - I note you had the UHC and MPCC in line - does that not give you colour correction problems? I have a similar filter and my tarantula ended up very green (OIII ish)....

arh thanks for the plugin roger. i'll give it a shot. cheers for the replies guys. Yes andrew, i use noiseware in photoshop to remove some of the noises. Have to agree, the uhc-s and mpcc combination gives off false colours or uneven balanacing but then again, wouldn't an unmodded 350d without filters give false colours too?

Yes excellent work, a modded camera does well to get that much, an unmodded one, simply fantastic.

Eric,

Another tip with the star rounding plug-in is that as far as I know, it works on the north, south, east and west trailing. If you have diagonally-trailing stars, rotate your canvas appropriately, and run the plug-in selectively.
