Mars from Melbourne this morning

Hi everyone,

My first go at Mars for this apparition. Was expecting the seeing to be better, but in typical Melbourne fashion was very flickery indeed. however quite pleased with seeing Mars again after several years.

Some nice cloud features over Syrtis Major and the South Pole area.

ASI174mm, 5 x Powermate, 12.5" f/5 scope, approx. 2,500 frames stacked per channel.

Well the telescope stayed outside - here is another image of Mars from this morning.

Again, very fast and flickery type of seeing, but a good view of the South Polar Hood with lots of cloud features visible.

One of the aspects that I really do enjoy about Mars observing, particularly with a Mono camera and the Blue channel, is being able to see live on the screen cloud features. A bit like watching the BOM Weather satellite on Earth but on Mars!

Great photo John, I'm just starting to dabble with some imaging, I've
started with the easier target link Jupiter with some fair results, will try Saturn next, then moving onto Mars. I can only hope to get something
half as good as you image.

Fine result for that frustrating type of seeing. You certainly said it that Mars is getting to the size that is good to look at live.

Good work John, and I can confirm the flickery seeing as I was out too.
I tried to collect some moon images and although the fine detail was coming through, the whole scene was waving and flickering like mad.
We'll see what Autostakkert can do with it.

Lovely images John, especially those southern cloud formation details, similar condition up here in Qld with 3 layers of fast moving air all in different directions so only IR images produced anything worthwhile.

Has a quick look at mars last night in smoke hazed Glen Iris
Unfortunately at 10.30-11pm it was very wobbly in the viewfinder and the video was unusable, couldnt stay up late due to work the next morning.
It is quite large though so that's a good sign.
