Each year, the Northern Sydney Astronomical Society runs a seven month course that teaches anyone interested in astronomy how to use a telescope and navigate the night sky.

The course for 2016 is starting on April 26, and will run on the fourth Tuesday of each month, starting at 7:30pm. We meet at Regis Hall in the grounds of St Ignatius’ College, Riverview Street, Riverview (Lane Cove). This course is primarily designed for those new to astronomy, who want to learn:

- How to choose the right telescope and accessories for their needs and budget
- How to use and maintain their telescope, and
- How to find their way around the night sky

No existing knowledge of astronomy is required in order to participate in this course.

The schedule is as follows:

Lesson 1 – Understanding the Night Sky (26th April 2016)
Lesson 2 – Finding Your Way Around the Night Sky (24th May 2016)
Lesson 3 – Types of Telescopes and Mounts (28th June 2016)
Lesson 4 – Eyepieces, Accessories, and Resources (26th July 2016)
Lesson 5 – Collimation, Maintenance, and Care of your Telescope (23rd August 2016)
Lesson 6 – Types of Objects (27th September 2016)
Lesson 7 – Getting Started with Astrophotography (25th October 2016)

Note that lesson 3 may be postponed, depending on the weather.

Cost: $30 for the course, $10 of which can go towards your membership fee if you decide to join the society. This is payable on the first night that you attend.
