Hi all, we've got a group of 20 or so MIT science postgrads visiting us in Perth and they're about to visit Karratha for a couple of weeks. Most of them are curious about the southern sky, is there anyone or anywhere in Karratha able to advise on the best way of satisfying their curiosity?
Cheers,
Andrew.

Ideally someone willing to give them a tour of the sky and a peek through a telescope, but if there is a local star tour company that you could point me towards that would be awesome!

I would be no good as a guide to the sky .. but I have a telescope they can look through. There is a guy in Broome that does it but thats a good 8 hour drive away - Greg Quicke astro tours. When will they be up in Karratha ?

Hi Andrew,
Try Hearsons Cove out on the Burrup peninsula when there is a full moon. Quite a few people go out there for a phenomenon called the staircase to the moon.

I happened to be working up there when the last super moon appeared and the beach was packed to the brim with cars n people. Nice place to take photos.
If they are keen to stay for a while I would recommend going out in the afternoon to check out the aboriginal art that is on the same road to the beach. There's a little track about half way down that turns to the right. From memory there is some 10000 art works there. Worth a visit.
For really super clear skies this time of year a trip to Millstream National park is definitely worth the effort. Even with no scope the night sky was impressive.
