Hi all,

I saw something intriguing on the Sun on Saturday, and I'm at a loss on how to describe what I saw. There was a series of filament arcs that were in a line all along side each other, somewhat resembling shark gills. I saw four of these filaments - something I had never seen before.

My question then is, what is the description for a series of 'parallel arcs'? This is the best way I have to describe it.

197327

They are not co-centric as they are all of the same radius. They are 'parallel' as best as I can say.

Anyone can offer a description?

Clever, really clever, :)

Smart arse... but clever.

Someone has to be serious so I would say they are offset arcs. For them to be parallel or concentric arcs they would have to have the same centre radii.

was being serious - there are a series of arcs in certain blood vessel networks which are not parallel but are called arcades -denoting a system of similar arcs only. See arterial arcades and the vasa recta in the small intestine.

To translate an object, you slide it to a new position without any rotation or change in size. If they were all the same length and radius they would be translated arcs.
Maybe, a series of translated arcs in the same direction.

Offset arc echos, or maybe offset repeatarcs.

I'll have a crack,

5 equidistant radially spaced congruent arcs of diminishing measure of arc from approx 160 to 90 degrees

But a picture tells a thousand words !

Graham's answer, arcade, seems to be the most suitable term. And it has the word "arc" in it.

An internet search doesn't show an actual term except arcade - a series of arches supported on columns.

Architecturally they would be offsets. If they weren't offset in the same direction, they would be arrayed arcs.
