Finally got the Avalon Linear performing well last night. Main thing was a poor choice in DEC algorithm (Lowpass2). Switching to hysteresis in DEC drastically improved guiding. Final tweaks got me pretty close to the recommended settings, even though they did seem crazy at first.

I managed to get over 3 solid hours on Gabriela due to not spending half the night tweaking gear. Hopefully that's the norm from here on out.

This one isn't processed all that much. I didn't even decon it :eyepop:

Cheers Andy! I'd actually found your Gabriela on Astrobin and used that as a reference when trying to determine composition. Yours was by far the best I could find on AB.

And yes, the Avalon is a very nice piece of kit. It has its quirks, but I'm very happy with the purchase.

Thanks Mike! Turns out I forgot to set the weighting when I did the integration, so it was noise evaluated instead of "sharpness" as I intended... but after doing it properly and comparing, there wasn't really much in it.

It is truly wonderful that your new mount performs so well Lee. Stars are perfectly round, allowing you to take advantage of your very capable scope+camera combo. Really happy for you Lee, and in the meantime, I will keep saving for a new mount too! :lol:

Cheers Suavi! There's much truth in what they say, about spending lots on your mount, it definitely pays off. The Linear has some quirks, but contrary to what I've seen some other people say, it can blow the EQ6 out of the water in terms of guided performance, and is a solid investment imo. The price is definitely getting up there though, so it'd really want to perform. As you know, I'd recommend the mount, but I don't think you can go too wrong from this price point upwards.

A superb image, Lee! I looked at the hi-res version and it is beautifully detailed. I cannot pretend to understand the astrophotographic techno-talk all you guys use (it's like trying to get a chimp to understand quantum mechanics :D ) but at least I can appreciate the beauty (and skill) in all of the wonderful images on this site.

I hope my beautiful new baby (a 152mm APM) which arrived today (see my brief narrative of today - with pic of mind-blowing Strahl Ratio report - under 'Finally, telescope choice made' in Equipment Discussions) can deliver such images once I learn all about it. I have so much to learn...again.

I think it's safe to say that your 152 APM could blow my little Esprit out of the water. Congrats on such an acquisition.
