Dear fellow night-sky explorers,

I have been keeping an eye on CMOS developments and have noticed that a few days ago Sony released a new 12mp sensor - IMX253.

Unless I am reading the specs incorrectly, the new CMOS sensor seems to be significantly more sensitive than ICX814 (915mV vs 660mV at F8), in spite of having a tad smaller pixels than the above mentioned CCD sensor (3.45microns vs 3.69 microns). I know that ADC is only 12bit and that the pixels are tiny, but if read noise is low then perhaps things are developing in the right direction?

Quite interesting. The read noise would have to be considerably lower for it to be worth while dropping down to 12bit.

Ah excellent

The sensor is a half decent size too at 17mm. One question will be whether or not it suffers from amp glow like some of their smaller CMOS sensors.

I guess we won't find out the specs we care about until somebody puts it in a camera, but it looks promising.
