Just taken out of my window at Bondi, 6:40pm.

Handheld with support, Canon 300D 55-200mm lens at 200mm, 200ISO, about 1/4s at whatever the camera decided the lens should be on 'P' (Program).

A desperate attempt to be first for once!!!

(Second image is labelled in case Mercury can't be seen in this size file.)

Phew! Did I get in b4 anyone else?!?

Hi Mike

With a very poor western horizon we missed this one. Thanks for posting such a lovely image, and congratulations on being the first, and best!

Cheers

Great shot Mike, hope you don't mind me adding my shot of the Moon et al to your thread. I just got home in Winmalee and spied the threesome near the corner of the house. Raced inside to get the 350D but needed the card and lens which were somewhere around the house so I grabbed my Contax P & S and put it on the tripod. The shot was taken at 6.55 p.m. about 1 sec exposure so you just beat me to it. Great evening here, must be around 20 C but the mozzies are bad.

Cheers, Steve

I got the same fate as Dennis, horrible West horizon.

OK Steve and Dave, I got in first but you two win! It really helps to have a bit of foreground interest that wasn't available here.

Got few more but haven't seen if I had anything better yet. Took a shot with alchemy as well but I will have to wait until I get it developed... bring on the 400D :)

Beaut shots everyone!
I missed it because of an especially prickly Cactus Hour.

After missing yesterday's event I decided to take the trip up to the top of the hill at Mapleton and cross the fingers. And lo and behold the cloud parted

A range of lenses and settings from 25mm ISO100 "P" settings :P to 600 mm ISO 200 and gradually upping the exposure to around 2.5 sec to finally 90mm ISO400 up to around 13 sec exposure. Even picked up Jupiters moons in the last to ;)

Excellent shots guys, Paul in awe of your work mate great image scale.

I wonder if I can get the imagescale on my A610 if i go for a zoom lense add on.

Here are my humble entries for the day.

My last one if you zoom in for a look shows the 3 small objects near (right and up) Jupiter, are these Moons?
If so what are there names?
I see these in Paul's shots more clearly as mine was a 10s exposure and his is a 13sec.

What a magnificent sight it was and well done to everyone who went out and observed/imaged the event, great work all.
Thanks okiscopey for starting the thread.

Here's my effort from last night.
I was very surprised to see Jupiter's moons showing up so clearly.

top Shot RB, did you have that tracking ona mount or just sitting on a tripod? Unfortunatelly I lost my horizon so couldn't get it when it was at its brightest. the atmosphere was also hazy in Newcastle, we had a stiff NE seabreeze blowing, but seeing the moons of jupiter was a real buzz. Your image is magnificent! Which lens and settings did you use. With the NE blowing I could only go for 1 or 2 seconds max

Thanks guys, I was really happy with the outcome too.

This was a tripod shot, using my new rule of 2's

2 sec exp
ISO 200
200 mm @ f/2.8
Canon 20Da

Here is probably the first image that you can definitely see Mercury. Taken at 18:27, 1/13 th sec f3.8. I got a shot about 5 minutes earlier that you can use averted imagination to see Mercury.

I have an animation taken later that night that shows how quickly the Earth turns. Jus need to make it small enough and still be able to see the planets.

Hmmm, not using enough imagination there :D

Here is the animation I put together. Covers ~1m 45s, cropped from larger images. Zips this size are ok on the forum here?
