It's taken a while to process this. He was one of the greats of the music industry. Obviously he is best known for taking a punt on a 'not very good' rock 'n' roll band in 1962. However, when you hear of the innovations he made in the studio and consider that they made Sgt Peppers with 4-track tape decks you can see what a genius he was.
Of course it wasn't just the Beatles, he produced over 700 records and earned 6 Grammy Awards. Reading through the tributes you hear what a wonderful person he was to know and how he always put the music first. I do like this quote from him.
"Tact is one of the absolute requirements of a record producer," Martin agreed. "It's no good bullying people because they dig their heels in and do the opposite.
"And if you do have a good idea, try and make them think of it."
