Hi Chaps

Looks like I will take up an assignment in PNG's capital Port Moresby and wonder a bit what the sky is like there ?

I travel with a Borg 77 Achro, Baader Maxbright and pairs of 26mm Meade SP's and 20mm Celestron Erfles, plus IDAS 82mm solar filter and Coronado SM40 BF5 as I realy enjoy solar viewing.

With astronomy in mind, any thoughts on, or experiences of PNG and Port Moresby would be of interest.

Best Regards

Carl

I was on a tour in 2014 where we stayed overnight in Port Moresby. We were told not to leave the hotel grounds at night. If you really wanted to go out, check with the hotel staff first and use the hotel taxi to get there and back.

A lot of the businesses and houses had high barbed wired fences. This didn't inspire a sense of safety.

Be very careful and check with the locals.

Watch your back, not the sky...!

The bank I used to work with back in the '80s sent staff over to Port Moresby on secondment to the bank there. The stories I heard about the security situation where hair raising, and the situation has got worse, would rather walk through the worst part of New York or Johannesberg than go out at night in Port Moresby.
