Without reading the link provided.... my 1st thoughts were ' Gamma Ray Bursts.'

They are 1 of the most powerful ' events ' in the Universe. and only last a second or so.

Still a mystery but a neutron star in another galaxy is one consideration.

My first thoughts when I started reading the press release a day or two ago were star quakes on a neutron star. They are repeatable (no idea on time scale) and are a release of built up energy within the dense object.
