I am a new member from the USA. I hope that is OK. :question:

I don't know much about how Astronomy differs in the Southern hemisphere so I thought I would join the forum and learn a little about the Universe with a Southern accent. :D

I imagine telescopes are the same no matter where you are so those topics should be familiar.

I look foward to getting to know you, to learn from the community and to share a few things myself.

Everybody is welcome Ed. The only difference down here is that we have to put our tripods on top of our telescopes instead of underneath them,
oh! and we have to aim our polar alignment scopes at a hole in the ground to align on the North Celestial Pole.:lol::lol::rofl::rofl:

Great to see you here and welcome to IIS!! NYC is one of my favorite cities in the world, hoping to make it back there for a few days next year.

Of course, in joining you realise you will be treated to many variations of "the Southern Skies are where all the really interesting stuff is" so you will have to come done to have a look one day.

Who knows, if the Southern sky sounds interesting enough I may have to make a trip South to see it for myself. But I guess I would need a new mount for my scopes. ;)

Considering the light pollution we have here I presume it is not astronomy that brings you to New York. I actually live on Long Island, about 20 miles or so East of NYC, but I still live under the light pollution of the NYC glow.

You are not wrong about the LP!! I just love the vibe in NYC, going to the theatre, wandering around the interesting neighbourhoods. Not everyones cup of tea but I like it!!

Should you ever feel the urge to do some observing from far southern
latitudes, you might want to consider joining us at one of the OzSky
Star Safari (aka Deepest South Texas Star Safari) events.

The good news is that you can leave your scope at home.

I am part of a group that volunteers (http://www.ozsky.org/whoswho.asp) our time to helping host northern
hemisphere observers so that they can enjoy southern skies using
an array of large aperture scopes (http://www.ozsky.org/equipment.asp).

Our next event is this coming April where we have approximately
47 of your fellow countrymen coming down, many of whom have been
before, along with a Canadian on his 5th OzSky trip and an observer
from the Isle of Wight on her second trip.
