Tried out my 8" SCT tonight and seeing conditions were terrible! Had it aimed at Jupiter tonight and there was a lot of heat haze, unsure where this was coming from??

The Moon also decided to make an appearance which flushed out the detail and colour all around it including Jupiter.

Anyone else in Melbourne taken out the scope tonight and agree about the seeing conditions?

yep a lot of skyglow tonight not worth the effort, must be the humid conditions.

Good to know it's just not me!

A few clouds are making an appearance as well.

I gave up, started to get bitten to death by those damn mozzies.

there was a fire in Somerville yesterday or the day before that probably didn't help.
i'm probably setting up monday night for 2 nights, forecast looks OK for mon/tues nights.

Truly awful evening...southerly breeze in the arvo, fires still going in Tassie I believe and high humidity. I took the dog out for his nightly marking of the territory at 10:30ish and the Moon was surrounded by lots of haze...roll on late Autumn.

Planned to, locked up the chooks around 10:30pm and decided against it based on what I was seeing.

Don't feel too bad gents, Sydney wasn't any better until after 4am this morning and even then it didn't last. Humidity, and heat haze very prominent.

Weather still pretty crappy tonight.

Some light cloud cover decided to show up.

I might need to double check collimation on my scope but Jupiters details don't seem to pop out, you can see the bands very faintly and when you use a high power eyepiece there is no detail.

I looked up about half an hour ago and the atmosphere appeared to be pretty steady, but breezy though.

High level haze again tonight, we need a good southerly blaster to clear out all the dust and haze in the air.

What does haze look like through a telescope? I'm not 100% sure how to recognise it.

Agree. I'm struggling to find a good seeing night these days.

The sky has a light glow, not dark enough in a way and the stars lack a little brightness that would usually be there when the sky is clearer.

Hey Melbourne, any chance of at least ONE CLEAR NIGHT????????????

It's not me! I am still waiting for my new scope to arrive. I did have a new camera arrive last week but without a scope to put it on, the weather gods wouldn't consider it worthy of clouds.

someone must have brought some serious gear!

a quick look on clearoutside looks like Thursday night and Saturday night are potential potentials.

There are 2 consistent, perennial gripe threads on IIS:

(1) The bloody weather &
(2) Bloody Oz Post!
