Finally a clear night to test the clip in filter I purchased off a fellow IIS member.

Although it was a super hot night (sensor temp was 30 degrees), with dithering most the noise disappeared during stacking.

I tried this same target before the filter and could only manage 120sec subs before sky glow overwhelmed, I would definitely recommend to anyone who is suffering from light pollution.

As always any comments or critiques are welcomed.

18 x 600sec lights
15 x darks
15 x flats
15 x bias

Cheers

Very nice results George, what filter and camera did you use?
Cheers Paul.

Hey Paul
Camera is a 40d with an astronomic Cls eos clip.

Good effort George.

Love these Astronomic CLS filters for longer subs in light polluted areas; just as you have done.

Yes and they actually do work- no bull!

I find I can also use mine for bringing out planetary detail, especially if the object is very bright viz Jupiter

Joe,

I'll keep that in mind for planetary.

I have to say I'm really surprised, at the results. Next step would be to try a dimmer target.

Nice job George. Don't waste your time taking biases if your darks match your lights. Darks contain bias data.

Do so, and keep up your good work George.

My wife only really noticed how easy the Great red spot (makes it much redder) and bands can be last night/early morn, due to this filter- it popped right out (and the hollow it sits in)- its amazing!

That's a great tip for a lot of us Raymo.

Cheers bigjoe.

Raymo,

How does the stacking software (dss in this case) differentiate between read noise of the chip and dark signal?

It doesn't. You have to take the calibration images and tell the software which is which. Most people build a "library" of bias, dark and flat images to apply to all their photos. Just make sure you have a decent number of them or you'll be adding more noise back into the mix.

Nice pic by the way. The data looks great though the processing seems a little harsh. The CLS filter is superb but it does block a lot of blue.

Cheers,
Cam

I'm hoping to move to CCD soon with set point cooling. I'll look at a library at that point.

I agree the processing is saturated and over done. I got a little carried away and also wanted to see how far I could stretch the data. I'm in the middle of reprocessing now.
