This is an area that is quite close to M42 and yet it seldom gets imaged. Lots of dust and gas with a little of everything within the field. I found that the O stars at the verge of the field really dominate and provide a lot of glare into this field. Possibly even some reflection nebulosity.

Integration 21.8 hours with a mix of LHaRGB

Edit. I have loaded the revised thumbnail of the larger new image for comparison.

Stunning Paul. Very fine processing as well.

New to me too. The handling of "Cousin It" at the bottom right, complete with bulbous eyes and shaggy dust-lane hair, is magnificent bordering on spooky.

Cool. This area is imaged often professionally due to the number of protostellar outflows in the region. There are so many Herbig-Haro objects in this field, it ain't funny. A few of the outflows (HH1/2, HH34) are more than a parsec in length... The "Cousin It" is the bow shock of HH1/2 (if I remember correctly...)

A road map of this very interesting region: http://www.narrowbandimaging.com/ngc1999_s2hao3_ap180_6303.htm

A lovely and very interesting image Paul. You need to zoom in on the lower right quadrant though :)

A very interesting field Paul, not one that I have come across in my relatively short time in this hobby :P Nicely done :)

Nice image Paul.

I had imaged the lower right cuadrant before, wich is also known as NGC1999.

Very cool field, Paul. Would probably look good as plain Ha with all that interesting structure.

Cheers,
Rick.

Nice image Paul, an object much less imaged that it deserves, due to the overwhelming neighbor that gets almost all attention :)
Only remarks I have is about the color balance, I find the image a bit dark and too magenta, probably due to the Ha contribution. I imaged the same area a while ago and several nebulas in the area were recorded with nice yellow and cyan while the dust was brown/grey-ish: http://www.glitteringlights.com/Images/Nebulae/i-Rnv7k22/O
It is a great image but I would check again the color calibration to display the full chroma palette present in the area..
Clear skies

Thanks guys for the comments. Much appreciated.

Smader, thanks for the link and the commentary on the region. Interesting stuff.

Thank Marco for your comment. I went back and redid the image from scratch as I when I looked at the image again with fresh eyes it did seem the colour balance was not right. Still not really certain that is quite what I was thinking my preference would be, but certainly happier with the look. I like the way the luminance is shown in your image over the way it looks in mine.

I have put a thumbnail up to demonstrate the difference. The link now has the new image.

Yeah, that's a lot of glare all right.
This is a fascinating nebula and new to me, and I am finding the detail in the lower right quadrant really interesting.
Nicely done, and thanks for taking the time to capture this one Paul.
Nicely done.
