G'day guys,

Thought I'd share my "best so far" image taken with my basic gear. I have a canon 1200D, this was taken through a yongnuo 50mm lens, piggy backed on a 200mm Saxon reflector on manual eq5. (Poorly aligned) about 11 photos before clouds rolled in. Taken at lake moogerah dam, Queensland.

Open to constructive criticism ( note the compression my phone did to it)

Cheers.

Hi Tristan, the 1200D has managed to pick up the areas of nebulosity in the LMC so you should be pleased with that. I see some stretching of stars in the upper left corner so maybe the lens needs to be stopped down a few steps. What F stop were you using for this image? Looks like you have the makings of a good system here Tristan.

Maybe they accidently sold me one that let's more HA in then usual haha, I was quiet surprised when they came out of DSS.

Stretching of stars I think is due the rough polar align, and/or the mount not setting to a low enough latitude (stops about 29°)

I was at F/1.8

Running these lens wide open at F1.8 is not recommended for imaging as they do not usually display a flat field. For your next run try stopping it down to F4 or F5.

Thanks for the advice!
