how is every one this evening? I recieved a telescope as a present a few months ago, put it together, looked around a bit and realy enjoyed it:) . I think I now have some sort of sickness, where I stand near the cattle trough all hours of the night staring up into inky darkness.
I have been visiting this site regularly over the last couple of months because I do not know the first thing about astronomy.
I dont know the first thing about computers either:whistle: so feel free to pass on any information which you may feel relevent :) looking forward to a wonderfull addiction:thumbsup:

G'day all thanks for the welcome :) that's why I thought I should join:thumbsup: . The scope is a celestron nexstar 5 ? I think it does a great job not that I'd know but I can definatley see stuff through it:lol:

ahhh, the Nexstar 5!!!

That would be a GoTo. You should be able to look at heaps of objects with that scope.

G'day Ric, gotta love the python lad's. Tombong is about 40 km's west of Bombala on the Southern Monaro. We back on to the Eastern edge of Kosiosko National Park. In winter you can see all the snow covered peaks of the main range from the hogget paddock, thats if its not snowing here too!

No worries, I've got my bearings now, We have a small holiday place down at Merimbula so I thought I had seen the name on the map. It certainly does get fresh down that way in winter but the viewing will be great.

Welcome to IIS, your darks skies sound wonderful.

Do yourself a favour and get a few things, if you haven't already:

A planisphere - the large Chandler one from Bintel is brilliant, this will really help you find your way around the sky
A pair of 7x50 or 10x50 binoculars to accompany the planisphere
A red torch (red light that is) to preserve your night vision when observing, you can just put some red cellophane over the front of an ordinary torch in the beginning but make sure its not too bright
A basic moon guide like "Discover the Moon" again from Bintel
A copy of "Bright Star Atlas 2000.0" again from Bintel

These will get you up and running very quickly especially when combined with a copy of Aussie Sky and Telescope or Sky and Space when it comes out, both have features to look at in each edition and are great guides.

Of course you don't have to buy the books from Bintel (http://www.bintel.com.au) only I have just quoted them because they have the books listed and available to give you a guide.

Sounds like you have lots of nights coming up out in the hogget paddock with your scope and binos, not sure winter will be so nice there though.

Well - you're a stones' throw from our place in Cooma. It would have to be a damn small stone and the prevailing winds would have to be just right.... but you could come up to Omaroo one weekend, when we're there, and bring your scope for a session. Jenny'll have the supper on and we'll sink a few reds or beers.
