Hi All,
First light with my ZWO ASI 174MM Cool camera, 3 x 3 min subs, No darks applied. Camera cooling was set to -20 deg. Basic processing.

The learning curve begins, but very excited at the possibilities after imaging with an unmodded uncooled DSLR!:D
Thanks for looking!

that's looking pretty impressive Craige, 3x3min Ha subs! that ZWO 174mm is looking quite the capable deep sky imager.

I've been following this camera with interest as I find myself staring at my noise filled modified DSLR images this summer (sensor readings as high as 43 degrees !).
What are you using as capture s/w ?
Excuse my ignorance but is this a mono version of the camera in HA ?
Keenly awaiting more images - looking very promising ;)
With a bit of a changing of the guard with the Atik cameras from 3xx series to 4xx series and the higher price due to a weak dollar these cameras are looking like an option.

hi tileys,
the mono without any filter is usually called luminance, looks like Cragie has stuck a Ha filter in front of the camera
these cameras are mostly used / designed for planetary work in mind as they are capable of high frame rates and have reasonably small chip size

however they are also looking to be quite capable at deep sky

Craige,
That's a very impressive outcome from the cooled ASI 174MM....
I think that quality of the result may encourage others to go down the same route.
Well done, mate!

Thanks Russ,
First impressions have been encouraging, I am looking forward to tonight as it is meant to be clear. :D

Hi Tileys,
I have been using Sequence Generator Pro to control the temperature and image capture of the 174MM. It was straight forward. I have also had a quick play with the beta version of Fire Capture.
I have a filter wheel attached with Ha,LRGB filters.

Thanks Ken,
Looking forward to more time with the 174MM to see what we can do.....

From what I've read it looks like you can get some banding without darks (your image looks good though) and there's the possibility of 'amp glow' - will be good to see how you go with your processing train and what you need to do to get more DSO results. With Sony scaling down their CCD development work and others like QHY having more cooled CMOS products in the pipeline I'm really curious to see what the next few months brings ;)

Craige,
I'm hoping to show what the ASI 174MM can do for solar imaging with the spectroheliograph under construction....
Working at >600 fps it should provide some excellent data.

That pic is impressive !
I've been contemplating that camera since I first saw the specs, I think I'll put it on the radar seriously.
Time to see what I can flog off to raise some $$$ ...

Mate cracking results for such a short integration. Can't wait to see a fully processed image.
Can I ask which HA filter did you use.

Hi George,
The Ha filter is a Sirius Optics 1.25" 10nm.
I plan to add RGB on my next clear moonless night.

10nm, do you have fairly dark skies?
Theres a few examples out there of what this camera can do, and there does seem to be some banding issues and amp glow as mentioned, all of which can be calibrated out I suppose.
Your image is the best I've seen very crisp details. I look forward to some clear nights and the rgb data.

That looks great!
Is the cooling built into the camera or did you add it yourself?

Stephan,
ZWO now have a range of cooled cameras:

Oh yes of course!
I have seen some mods done before the new range were released.

I am in the market for a new camera. I have an ORION Colour 11 and its a horrid little thing. The idea of a cooled camera is very appealing. There seems to be some interest about these cameras, are they a good camera? I am looking at the colour cooled camera around the $1 k

They've just come out just after Christmas, and the lucky people who did manage to do some imaging with them so far have produced amazing results, especially for planetary imaging. They're good value for money so around $1K will get you a cooled mono or colour one.
Yes, the cooling is built into the camera.
I haven't uploaded the cooled versions to our webstore yet but will do so today. Meantime we do take phone orders.
