Looking to purchase one for a reflector.

Have read reviews saying a Cheshire is enough while others prefer going down the more expensive route and use the Hotech or Howie Glatter. Also seen some collimators flex when the focuser screws are tightened.

Got a few models I found online. Thoughts? Something to spend a lot on or put cash towards other accessories?

1) Orion LaserMate Deluxe Collimator ($109)
2) Orion Collimating Eyepiece ($85) / Skywatcher Collimation Tool ($60)
3) Glatter 1.25" tuBlug ($109)
4) Hotech 1.25" ($185) or 2" ($229)
5) Farpoint 1.25" Precision Laser Collimator ($149)

Thank you as always :)

Stefan.

A Cheshire is good, and has some advantages.
It can be used to ensure the secondary is correctly sited under the focuser.
And as far as I know, does not suffer from some of the issues of lasers not being correctly collimated themselves.
But they are more difficult to use alone because you cant see through the tool while adjusting the primary collimation screws.
Additionally, they are best used in daylight.

I use a Hotech, 2" self centering laser.
It avoids the flex issue you mention.
I use the "cross hair" model to get precise centering of the laser.
It is easy to use, and always gives reliable result.
And It can be used day or night.

I also have a Cheshire, and in conjunction they compliment each other.

This is just my experience, and I am sure others have alternate solutions that they swear by.

PS: I also have an Orion Laser mate, (1.25 barrell) that I don't use any more.
You can have that for half new price or near offer (pick up or + post) if you like.

I have used a GSO laser collimator for years, It's advantage is that it can be collimated itself easily and is cheap ($79 at Andrews). You don't need to over spend for fancy brands. Like Alan I also use a simple Chesire and that overs all my scopes.

Thanks for the input guys.

Picked up a Hotech Collimator here on the forums that popped up!

Cheers,
Stefan.
