The idea of this thread is to provide a link to information for those around the Central Coast (and Sydney-Newcastle etc.) of any proposed Observing Nights for the Mangrove Mountain (Pony Club site).
[ I will start a similar thread for proposed informal Astro camping trips.
Thinking it is best to keep them separate]

If you subscribe to this thread (under thread tools) you can receive an email notification when a new post is entered.

This may help with the problem of short notice for irregular observing sessions.

Its been a while, and I know people have been wanting some local observing for a while, and I see tonights forcast looks OK.

So I am happy to open up the Pony Club tonight if there is enough interest.

Sorry for the late notice, but sometimes you have to run on the spur of the moment.

Reply if interested, but being Sunday I am not expected too much.
Happy either way.

Allan, thanks for starting this thread but I will not be able to make it tonight.
The pony club is still the best location for many of us and I would like to get up there as often as possible.
It looks like a good night for viewing.

OK, we are Go then.

I plan to get there just before sunset, probably around 8pm.
It will still be light enough for setup for an hour or so.

I expect to pack up around mid-night. (depending on consensus)

So anyone wishing to come and/or go within that time slot are welcome.

Joe, try and bring your scope this time.

Had a good session last night, the dew finally won around 12:30.

A big :thanks: to Allan for opening up the site, Geoff for his witty conversation (congratulations on 9 meteors), Joe for his patience and advice (even though it means my wallet will get a lot lighter :) ). I know I learned quite a bit and I'm reasonably sure that Terri did as well.

Being my first "Star party" I didn't quite know what to expect, but everyone made it a joy to stay out getting damp until 1:30 am.

7 timer shows a cloudless sky for this Saturday (30th Jan).
However, it also show Thunder storms.
Moon is not up until around midnight, so this is potentially a goer.

Just Giving notice,
so just lets watch the sky to see which is more likely.

I can be ready to go at short notice.

NOTE also, potential camping trip to Bretti is on the cards for some time over the next two weeks. (See separate thread)

It's about time I experienced what my 8" can do under some darker skies than suburban Newcastle.

What sort of time do people turn up? How close is parking to the site... if leaving earlier are you likely to spoil everyone's dark adaption? Need to factor in Mother's Day morning.

Thanks, Iain

Welcome to IceInSpace Robert :welcome:
You will be most welcome Robert.
PM me if you need any information off line.

Best to arrive a little before sunset. So setup of scopes in daylight is easier and allows familiarisation with the site.

I am hoping to arrive around 5pm.

Vehicle access is right onto the observing field. (ie set up next to your car)

It will be cold.!!! (I wasn't joking about freezer suits, many of the regulars have them).
Bring your own drinks, food, thermos, warm clothes, chair, scope/binos if you have them. Cover your torch with Red Cellophane (or like). Or use a red head light (or paint white leds with red nail polish etc)

Come and go as you must, but be considerate of others. If leaving early maybe park closer to the driveway. Check if anyone is imaging.

My weather app suggests that Saturday will be fine, if not a little cloudy.

Presently no rain in sight for the mountain.

Daytime 24 degrees, dropping to 10 degrees in the dark. A temp that low leans towards less cloud, which can only be good.

Time to bump the charge on the scope battery, and remember how all of this works!

Bring the wet weather gear, 2 out of 3 forecasts indicate humidity will be high and dew heavy. I have also noted a slight chance of high cloud later in the evening.

I'm still willing to try, but I don't have a lot to setup, so I'm not too bothered if it is not the best conditions.

glend
05-05-2016, 09:51 AM
Just on that subject Kevin, i have been battling heavy dew for the past few nights, with humidity over 80% and temps around 12C. I find getting the heaters started early helps alot. Of course i am in an observatory and off the ground, thus i can keep the roof closed until i am ready to start imaging, and that is a big help as well. A breeze might help delay it. I recall that Allan_l had a plan in the past to wrap his scope in a mylar rescue blanket - the idea being that it would work like a sacrificial anode and attract the condensate and spare the scope. In theory this should work because it is the cold night sky above you that causes dew to form as heat is sucked out of the scope, so a cover over it should stop heat lost. Ie the dew does not settle from the sky but condenses out of the air around you onto the scope as it loses heat to the sky. Keep the scope warm, less dew. Of course you will need power to keep the heaters going and as we see from Bretti experience, it often becomes a loosing battle as midnight approaches. Good luck on Saturday.

Hi Iain,
That will be fine.
Please drive into the driveway and up to the shed. (about 150metres)
There is access to the observing field directly beside the shed.
Maybe drop your lights to Parking Lights if you can and people are observing, but I think it should be OK still then.

Be careful of fast moving traffic behind you when you slow to turn into the drive. Put your right hand indicator on as soon as you see the yellow "horse and rider" safety sign. It is the next driveway on the right, about 100 metres on).

Great to finally meet Shane and Neil and to catch up with Allan_L, Geoff the owl and of course Joe (who I've just banned :D).

Had to get Joe to do all the settings for me which was a hilarious sight.

Thanks to Allan and Joe for allowing me to look through their scopes, great views of Jupiter, Saturn, Eta and many other DSOs.

And here's the result of the quick test shots I took with the Canon 1Dx.
I only did four x 15sec test shots on a tripod, total of 1 minute.
The details of this shot are:
Stack of 4x15 sec, ISO6400, @ 16mm, f/6.3 (lens EF16-35mm, f/2.8 L).

The camera's a wonderful example of Canon's top of the range model, so solid and the image quality top notch.
Very clean at ISO 6400 and obviously this shot doesn't have enough exposure time to pull out any decent detail since they're only 15 sec exposures but nice nevertheless.

Sky glow's getting worse up there though, you really notice the change now.

G'day Allan,
This Saturday was a planetary line up for Debbie and myself to make it to the Pony Club. Had I had a look at this forum yesterday arvo we would have been there in a flash last night. As it stands though, both scopes got wet in our beer garden last night and we were back up after 4am this morning to catch a 'few' meteors.

Dear Allan
As much as I hate to admit it you appear to be right - I have searched the rule books and you are allowed to overtake on the left (its called undertaking in some circles). I was aware that you can overtake on any lane on multi lane road but that you are allowed to overtake on left on freeways caught me unaware. I must say this is stupid and dangerous and most other civilised countries ban it.

Friday night is tough for me as I don't get home from the city until 5:30. It would be a frantic rush to get out there before too late and get setup.

The Showjumping Club have an event on Sunday also. I'm not sure if they setup their jumps ahead of time. Also, the moon will be at about 1/3 tonight, and close to Jupiter in the sky. Obviously, the contrasting from the moon will worsen over coming days.

I'll definitely be going tonight (Friday). I have a key to the gate, and will aim to be there by 5pm.

Glad I was able to get out there. Not too happy with my mount at the moment but I'm sure it is something I've done. Supports the old adage "don't fix it if it ain't broke". It's what I get for trying to get a better polar alignment on a simple wedge platform.

Looking forward to getting out again next time. Hope to play with some photography as well.

...The only problem with long weekends, is the extended catch-up time on the far side...

Yes, Friday was a good night. Even though we were casting shadows, there were still a lot of things to see in the sky. We were right about the Saturday being a loss though.

I still maintain that I saw Pluto at the end of the night!

Kevin, I think my compass app might be more to blame for your night's frustration than anything you did. For some silly reason, it shows true south to be west of south. A lot of googling (as well as a couple of other apps) shows this to be (now) obviously wrong. :mad2:

It will also explain why I have been having such grief with the wedge, myself..

My deepest apologies for screwing over your night's viewing! :ashamed:

Oh, and it was a pleasure to meet you also! :D

sharptrack2
16-06-2016, 09:44 PM
No worries Shane,

That reminds me to double check the compass setting myself. I seriously doubt that being a few degrees off due south would have caused my issue. The view was seriously drifting in declination and RA was retrograding (is that a real term? ) It looked like it was tracking too fast.

I recently fussed with the latitude setting and declination zero, and personally think that I moved too far. I'm getting a digital level/protractor delivered very soon and will spend some serious time calibrating the mount with a laser and some trigonometry.:work:

Will be ready for our next opportunity! Definitely before July 2nd, planning on being south of Sydney at the airfield if the weather cooperates.

Shano592
28-06-2016, 10:00 AM
OK, putting a tentative ping out for Mangrove Mountain for Saturday evening. Weather permitting, of course. CFN suggests at the moment, that it will be cloud free until around 10pm, then about 13% cloudiness. Let's hope it lasts.

If anything, it gets me away from the election hoohaa for a night.

Going on the last week's weather, I would suggest that cold weather gear may be in order.

@RB can probably give a more accurate account, but I believe last Saturday night got down into negative territory up there. -2.8 I believe.

The cold not withstanding, I'm staying home to play in the comfort of my backyard this Saturday. Hopefully with my freshly serviced Celestar 8, set neatly on my new SW HEQ5 mount, that I now have to learn how to use.

 I don't think the 9 Volt battery from the old mount will stand up to the task of powering the new mount.

Shano592
28-06-2016, 11:53 AM
A car battery will fix that issue.

A new mount. *sigh* ... there goes the weather!

I'm going to take the wedge up and see what is involved, once I'm actually point towards True South, not 24° away.

Any other takers, the gates should be opened around 4pm (to confirm on Saturday). With the wedge in play, I want to spend a little more daylight sussing things out.

It's OK Shane, I had a little chat with the weather god and got him to agree that this coming Friday is long enough to punish me for buying it last Saturday. ;)

I thought about just diving in and using the cigarette lighter in the car, but prudence is yelling in my ear to stay where I can get serious lighting if I need it to figure out what I've done wrong. :bashcomp:

As I was hoping to make it up to Katoomba, the cold is going to detour me... should have bought a Freezer suit!

If I get confident enough between now and Saturday, I might make an appearance.

Anyone else?

I'm thinking I might take the chance and get both feet wet. I just need to work out this polar alignment routine. Drift alignment has been strongly recommended instead of the polar scope, so reading up and need to practice.

My heavy weather wet gear, for sailing, has proven effective in fighting off the cold so I should be able to get a couple of hours in.

Maybe Allan can manage the drive up and provide a safe haven for frozen toes and noses! hint, hint.... ;) I'm happy to bring packets of hot chocolate and tea bags.

So count me in as a definite, most probably, will be there.

Well, Geoff was a surprise visitor tonight.

When he arrived, they sky was covered in high cloud. The clouds finally left at around 7 or 7:30pm, from memory. From that point on it was clear and clean, with only a little atmospheric turbulence.

Through Kevin's scope, we were able to see one of the Galilean moons transit Jupiter.

I wasn't able to get tracking right on the wedge, but wasn't too far away. Maybe next time, with a little more daylight, and a better compass.

Thanks to Kevin and Geoff for making the trip out.

Gate was locked just after 11:30pm.

Great meeting Geoff last night. Great conversations even though I was little quiet. It was chilly and I was feeling it. :cold:

:thanx: Thank you Shane for opening up. It did start to look pretty poorly after dusk, and I almost wanted to pack up. Glad I held off and waited it out. :stargaze:

Got some of my best views of Saturn, Mars and Jupiter. Not sure if it was the cleaning the telescope got, the new diagonal, or the seeing. Doesn't really matter, watching a crisp clear Ganymede shadow move across the planet was awesome. Too bad I was focused on finding the Sombrero galaxy during the GRS transit, I missed that opportunity. Finding M104 in my own scope, actually the credit goes to Geoff, but seeing it for the first time through my scope was quite satisfying. :astron:

Also really appreciate the loan of the 40mm panoptic EP. The nebulea we looked at really popped. I have made up my mind what my next major expense will be! ;)

Looking forward to the next time!

Greatn to meet you too Kevin, thx for the views through tyour Celestron, it was worth waiting around for after the clouds cleared. And thx for that Hot chocolate too. it hit the spot.

Yeah... Skysafari just wouldn't link up an Saturday night.

On Sunday I set everything up in the rumpus room, and it was running beautifully. The only thing I did was to remove and refit all of the cables from the Nexus to the scope.

Even last night, it was sweet. Must have been a connection issue.

Next time up, I'll show you the view through the F6.3 reducer, Geoff.

Considering the Pony Club this Friday night after work.

The moon will be waning to 31%, and will not rise until about 2am (I will be back home and snoring by then).

I really want to get as much time into the wedge as I can, and Saturday night could potentially carry clouds for the turn of weather on Sunday.

I will confirm again on Friday, but at the moment, looking 72.6% sure.

Any takers are welcome to join in.

EDIT: Just looking at CFN, the high cloud doesn't look promising for the evening. Now looking 46.1% sure...

26-07-2016, 02:28 PM
I'm in the City for the boat show during the day, but could be up for a session if I'm back at a reasonable hour to get up there. Based on recent patterns, the cloud won't hang around much after night fall, but seeing might still be a bit mediocre.

I hope you are right in that.

sharptrack2
26-07-2016, 02:55 PM

I'm sure no one will object, anyone is welcome to come up. There's an acre of open space at least, strategically parked vehicles and a short distance should provide plenty of isolation for laptop glow.

I'll know by 2:30-3:00 if I'll be able to make it in time.

Looking forward to meeting you Chris if the weather cooperates.

Shano592
27-07-2016, 10:23 AM
Today's forecast puts the possibility of the Pony Club now at 85.08%.

CFN shows high cloud peaking at 13%, later in the evening, with no low cloud at all. Hmm, the longer forecast shows Friday as having up 45% cloud, around the 7pm mark.

Starting to get interesting! This will also be a good chance to test the amber LED headlamp in the field.

@ChrisV, of course you're welcome. Whenever I have brought the laptop up, it just sits in a box, as you have said. I don't think I have ever inconvenienced anyone, as I put a filter on the screen, and drop the box flap when I walk off, or have subs running.

In further good news, my wife has discovered an incredible peanut butter cookie recipe, using 3 ingredients. I'll get a batch baked for the night. They will complement Kevin's tea perfectly!

Have re-considered and decided to go into the city on Saturday. It's a bit of a tradition, over the last 3-4 years, of spending the morning looking at boats, and spending the afternoon at Hard Rock Cafe :drink:. So compromise was the word of the day, I now don't have to rush around and get home in time to go observing, but instead will have to put up with the crowds on Saturday.

So count me in!!

Not sure how I will deal with the cold yet :cold:, but I will have the makings for tea and hot chocolate, and the stove can serve as a hand warmer to! :campfire:

:party::stargaze::astron:

Kevin there are plenty of places that sell those chemical hand warmer packs. I have seen them in several chemist shops, Anaconda, Ray's Outdoors, etc. I have used them at Bretti in the past, they last a couple of hours.
Good luck battling the crowds at Darling Harbour

Kevin, I'll bring another heavy quilted jacket along, and you're welcome to add that to your ensemble, if you like.

Glen, will we see you this evening? The offer is open to all comers! I know there is a fair bit of Gosford and Sydney glow, but it is less than an hour from home...

Hi folks,

I'd love to pop by tonight, however I'd just be dropping by to say hi, ask everyone annoying beginner questions and maybe look through others' vastly superior rigs as I won't have mine with me (I don't have a grab & go). Is that an acceptable type of visitor?

Also need to make sure my car headlights won't ruin things by arriving around 10-1030pm...? I'm working in Erina tonight, can be on my way around 10pm. Where's the Pony Club exactly?

sharptrack2
29-07-2016, 10:56 AM
@Glend, I'm bringing my other two smaller scopes with me for comparison with the video camera, you can always use one of those, not quite up to your RC views though... ;)

I'm hoping to stay busy enough to keep everything warm, have snow gloves, decent jacket, working on the boots and pants. Was thinking of bringing along an extra tarp and poles and setup a shelter off the side of the car to hole up under if it gets too much to bear. I even have a small propane camp heater, but I don't want to make it too comfortable, might not want to go out and actually look through the scope.

Battery is charged, have my new headlamp, new 50 and 85mm, f1.8 lenses, new protractor level (wow... what a difference it made in alignment), scope and mount packed, only one thing left....

What time can I show up?! :P

sharptrack2
29-07-2016, 11:06 AM
@thecableguy, visitors and questions always welcome. I still consider myself an absolute beginner and have been at it for over a year now.

If we see you pull into the drive, I can always come down with a red light and guide you in. 10pm may be pushing it for what we might want to endure given the forecast temperature, but generally we start packing up around 11pm... all depends on the seeing and if we've run out of hot water for tea :D.

See the sticky thread...http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=26142

for directions.

Hope you can make it out, don't hesitate to call to check on us, 0424063305.

thegableguy
29-07-2016, 11:20 AM
Hmmmmm.... yeah probably won't make it. I finish performing around 930pm, by the time I've packed everything into the car and get on my way it'll likely be after 10pm and it's a 40-min drive so unlikely to be there before 1040pm. Probably not worth the drive if you're going to be packing up when I arrive.

That's a real shame! I'm a musician & singer and I work pretty much every Friday & Saturday night; do these things ever happen mid week? I'm guessing not...?

A big thank you to Shane for opening up last night, Allan and Neil for attending! Was a good night! :thanks:

Seeing started off reasonably good, then faded out a bit, then cleared right up around 11pm :stargaze:. Lots of meteors (to me anyway), I think we all had double digit counts by the end. There were a number of really bright streamers, I hope I got one or two on the camera :D.

Some good fun target competitions (we all tried to find the same thing, I think I did pretty well with my little C8 up against the big boys...:poke::scared3:;) )

I scored a couple of firsts, personally found M104, M27 and Neptune. Counted 4 moons around Saturn, and got my best view of Centaurus A.

Regrettably some could not make it, for various reasons (mostly work! I know the feeling), here's hoping they can make the next night out.

All in all, definitely worth not getting home until 01:30am. I'm ready for next weekend!

Yes, it was a good night, with really good company. Thanks to Kevin, Neil and Allan.

The moon did have an effect on the eastern side of the sky - the west was beautiful and dark; the stars were crisp and clean - but the east was quite contrasted out.

Slowly getting the hang of the LX on the wedge. This time was much better.

Final Count for me:

Meteors: An easy 20. All over the sky, too. Some of the best were in the vicinity of the SMC.

2 ISS passes, though the first one ended just being a plane...

Final temp was approx 2°C

Gate was locked just on 1am

Bed just after 2am

Youssef:

Yourself and your friends are certainly welcome to these nights. We welcome all comers.

The Pony Club nights are generally held on the week of the new moon, and most often on a Saturday night. We jumped at last night because the weather has been so up-and-down lately.

There is a chance for next week, otherwise it will be at next month's new moon... weather permitting.

Hi all Pony Club attendees.

Last time I was up there, I found a large end cap.
It is exactly the same design and size as my Skywatcher (9x50) Finder scope end cap (larger one). (Inscribed 575 which seems to be the internal diameter)

It has been a little abused by dancing horses and the elements, but I have cleaned it up, and re-shaped it, and it is currently working well when tested on my finder scope.

If you lost such a thing, around the area I usually park, let me know.

As for our next observing session, Saturday the 1st of October is the next New Moon. However, as this is a long weekend and within school holidays, I expect the equestrian people may be holding their annual camp over.
If anyone has any further information on this, please post.

The above is also a reason why Bretti may not be a viable option either.

The weather is looking pretty cooperative at the moment... should have a few good clear (and warm) hours before the clouds find their way over.

Hey Guys!
Hope you have a great night!
Sorry I am an NRL tragic compulsive.
So I definitely won't be there.
BUT Don't forget to allow for Daylight Saving!
So the Sun will actually be setting at 18:57 ( around 7pm AEDT)
... so Kevin, that gives you an extra hour to get your brownie point jobs done.

Shano592
29-09-2016, 12:11 PM
Allan, doesn't the van have satellite TV? You may have to rectify that...

I guess it doesn't really matter... NRL isn't a real sport anyway. More of a cuddlefest... :P

Allan_L
29-09-2016, 02:44 PM
Yes it does!
But it doesn't have a 65" HD TV.

I think I should let THAT one ... go through to the keeper.

Hope you guys have a good night.
The forecast looks really promising.

Anyway, have fun on your night in.

Hi! I've not yet been to the PC, but Sunday the 2nd sounds like it could be a great night for a visit.

I see the pinned thread with directions, but is there anything else I should know before I rock up? If nobody else shows, is it open to the general public (i.e. can I still setup and observe)?

Thanks in advance for any information... I've been looking for a somewhat closer area to do some non-overnight observing.

-Richard

sharptrack2
01-10-2016, 04:26 PM
Hi Richard,

The area is not open to the public. There are certain forum members who have a key to the gates and we are dependant on one of them being available. AllanL and Shano592 are 2 that I know of.

I was just checking the forecast, and it is starting to look not good. Cloud increasing earlier than it was a couple of days ago and with the sun now setting an hour later, I would have to make a call that I will not venture out. It could stay dry but the high cloud will ruin visibility.

Follow this thread and you'll be sure to find out when someone is planning a observing night. Almost always around the new moon. I would go more often but getting interest is a challenge sometimes. Hope to see you out the next time I can make it, keep an eye on the thread for a definitive answer tomorrow.

Thanks Kevin for the information. I've been wearily eying the weather as well. I will be sure to check the forum tomorrow to see what the consensus is.

Clear Skies,

Shano592
02-10-2016, 09:54 AM
Hmmm.

Cloud increasing after 7pm, up to 60% by 1am.

I don't mind heading up still, if the concensus is to go ahead.

The forecast yesterday looked worse, so things may yet improve some more.

sharptrack2
02-10-2016, 11:29 AM
I agree Shane, certainly worth keeping an eye on. I would say you have a better than 60% chance of getting in some viewing just after sunset. The low humidity is a bonus. In my very meager experience so far, it looks to me like it will clear up right at dusk and then start to haze up around 10pm. Last night was clear at my house, but atrocious seeing after about 9 pm, and that was the weather pattern I observed.

I'll still have to say not this time, committed myself to other activities when I saw the forecast.

Good luck! I hope it turns out nice. I know that it is typically well worth the drive when there are clear skies.

02-10-2016, 11:56 AM
Yes, Acuweather is saying 65% cloud cover by the evening. Beautiful outside at the moment. Will keep looking in case the the forecast is wrong (probably not). Make a final call by 3.30 - 4.00 Shane (as your the key man). Sunset not until 7.00

nobby2
02-10-2016, 12:27 PM
If i'm using Cloud Free Night correctly. That is selecting the NSW map and dragging left to right it is showing cloud increasing by about 1600 hours. Yellow then Orange.

Just talking to Shane who gave me a key. We agreed to give it a no show tonight so that people can get on with other plans for the day and evening.

As I am retired I will be happy to look at a wider window of observing on any given month e.g A Friday, Saturday, Sunday or week night may be suitable given a weather pattern or moon rising - setting window.

Thanks Neil and Shane! Too bad it did not work out this time, but I'm looking forward to trying it again in the near future. I try to get out to Wiruna when I can, but the time commitment is tricky sometimes.... so I'm very interested in someplace more local I can sneak away to :-)

Cheers and I hope everyone has a great night!

I don't think I can muster the energy to go up tonight.
Sorry folks....
I just arrived home at 4pm from mt Son's place at Penrith where I was installing ceiling fans and power point in his house. yesterday and today.

I am completely knackered.
I am ready to collapse and give these old bones a rest.

Sounds like cloud is predicted anyway.

cheers for now.

Hi Shano, I dont usually install fans for love or money,( I hate them with a passion ) but somehow my Son had a list as long as his arm for me to complete over the weekend. Whats a laugh though, when I got home and tried to relax on the Monday....my own Water heater split and leaked everywhere under my house. Oh well, I didnt need a rest anyway....

Hi All
Is anyone up for a few days up at Bretti around 28th to 30th of October. I know Allan had talked about Coolah maybe in October, but I can only get these days and did not want to travel too far from my daughter at this stage. Just seeking out interest for now and is dependent on weather of course. Cheers Rick

15-10-2016, 12:41 PM
I might be interested Rick, but have some complications. I think that Allan had plans for that weekend at Coolah, and I believe there is mobile coverage at his place (but I could be wrong), which might be easier to stay in touch with your daughter (unless you have a Sat phone of course). Your right that Bretti is closer, at least by the driving distance calculator i used, by 100kms, from my place. let's see what happens.

Just in case anyone is at a loose end and fancies a longer trip, I'm hoping to make it to somewhere around the Warrumbungles for New Moon, weather permitting of course. I'd be looking for no less than 3 clear nights to make the trip worthwhile. Company is always welcome :)

G'day guys. I'm at Coolah now, working on the place again. For those who saw it back when I first bought the place, it won't be recognisable anymore. But I still have plenty more to do before I'm finished.

This coming new moon has turned into a problem because of some changes to my roster. I'm still going to make a flying visit to get a night or two of observing done, but that's about it this time around.

I plan to get here on Sunday afternoon on the 30th and leave on Tuesday. Feel free to drop in on your way to or from other spots if that works.

I'll be here most new moons, so there will be plenty of chances for extended observing later on. Plus, it will only get better here as time goes by and I get the place sorted.

Hi Iain.
Welcome to IceInSpace :welcome:
Not much is involved.
Just turn up and say g'day.
Keep an eye on this thread for sessions at Mangrove Mountain Pony Club.
This month most of us are looking to a 4 day astro camp at Bretti free camping reserve.
You are welcome to join us for all or part.
It is about 3 hours north. Good dark skies. FREE.
Or maybe someone else will initiate a one night session at the pony club.
Looking forward to meeting you and your daughter.
Please keep in contact.

Thanks Glen.
Yes, Shane gave me a key. Very handy for the non-workers to catch optimum times mid week.
I had a great night of clear, dry sky with no wind.
Started the night in the south west with the regular miky way targets below scoropius before they sank below the horizon. Ptolemy cluster to the wild duck cluster. Very low for a dob and slightly effected by the small waxing moon.

Was very happy to discover some new galaxy targets including the cluster of galaxies in the East, close to Dorado and Reticullum. NGC 1533, 1533, 1543 all around the magnitude of +10.53 using my new Telrad in combination with my 8 x 50 Finder.

Star hopping reward on a similar cluster in Formax. Starting with Achemar and working down to NGC 1365 and others close by. Not many guiding stars to help.

Finished the night almost lying on the ground (the joy of dobs) to catch Andromeda Galaxy very low in the North.

The recent 'local conditions' pattern here, despite a BOM partly cloudy forecast, is perfectly clear day with breeze dying off after dark, occassional cloud at dusk but it clears before midnight. I have had a couple of good imaging nights after waiting it out.. Very odd but i will take what i can get.
But then again i don't have to drag my gear to the PC.

Its hard to trust any one source now days... I've been using 7Timer in conjunction with Cloudfreenight, and the BOM. So far better than 80% accuracy in my decisions to setup or not.

Just saw that the BOM has a hail storm warning up for the PC area this afternoon, and its already dumping on the Hawkesbury region. Absolutely clear here. The problem with these distant storms after dark is that lightening travels along way and buggers up imaging.
