My friend from overseas wanna see milkway however said BM/Blackheath is too far (~2 hrs drive) and prefer some places around an hr.

I had a look few beaches in the south like Garie but since it is national park, it closes at 8:30pm.

Any of you have any suggestion? Currently the Milkyway is ESE thats why I prefer south.

The milky way season is over now, well at least for viewing the core anyway. I would guess that a good location from south Sydney would be somewhere down near Wollongong or there abouts.

my observatory is located just outside of Berry and you can easily see the milky way when it is up. unfortunately as any reader of Woman's weekly can tell you, December is Sagittarius month, meaning the sun is in the middle of the milky way. wait till winter and take a short drive south west to a camping site (during a new moon) and you should be good.

Hi David
A spot that may be worth checking is on Lady Wakehurst Drive at Otford at the southern end of the Royal National Park. There are a couple of spots where you can park off the side of the road that afford a clear view over the ocean from N.E. to Sth. and at almost 200 metres above sea level. The co-ordinates are :- 34.12.41 south and 150.00.37 east if you want to check it out via GoogleEarth. Not really dark but you should be able to see the Carina / Puppis section of the Milky Way.

Good Luck
Jeff

Since my friends are staying for few days so now trying to squeeze in between their plans, the sunset and the moon rise

And it will be cloudy for the next few days, should start clearing again by back to work Tuesday, hope your visitors get to see something.

I've seen the milky way many times from suburban Sydney... though its very washed out.

A 45min trip from the fringes of the city in almost any direction should give you a decent view.
