Finderscope and illuminator eyepiece

Hi guys

My XT8G came with the Orion Illuminated Plossl 12.5mm but I am not sure what's the use of this? I might sell it if not necessary but wondering if you guys use a illuminated plossl and if so what you are using (in case I decide to replace it)?

Also for the XT8G I currently have the below finderscopes:

Orion 9x50 Illuminated Right-Angle Correct Image
EZ Finder II reflex sight

Based on research, I am considering to replace EZ Finder II with a Telrad instead and use it along side the RACI on a dual finder scope mounting bracket. Would this be a good approach or should just use the RACI instead?

The illuminated eyepiece should give a precise centre when aligning the finder or telrad to the scope. This gives better finder alignment so that targets are well centered from finder to main scope.

The XT8G is a Go To I believe? If so the illuminated eyepiece is to assist with accurate alignment during setup. If using the scope in a go to mode, All you would normally need is a red dot finder to find bright stars. That is all I use on my 20".
Another point, telrads can be quite heavy, that's why I don't use, tend to unbalance a dob!

Hi,
I find that having both the red-spot and 9x50 useful, especially during initial alignment. The red dot will help get the scope close to your target. Hopefully at this stage the target star will be visible in your scope's e.p. If not, then the 9x 50 can be used to refine the alignment. Once the target star is visible in the scope, centre it with your 12.5mm reticle e.p. then without moving the scope go back and adjust your other finders so that the target is centred. At this stage you can then remove the RDF if you want, and just rely on your 9x50 finder. But recapping - both types have there place and are useful.

I noticed that in addition to 12.5mm illuminated reticle eyepiece, Orion also makes the illuminated 20mm centering eyepiece; I wonder when one might want to use the high power illuminated ep over a low power one? I though the 12.5mm would be more advantageous for goto alignment? Thanks!
