I am looking for an active astro group around Caloundra, I am moving there midd next year.
My interest is astro photography.

Hi John, I don't think there is a club there anymore but there are several IIS members in the area. LewisM is into astrophotography, he is in Maroochydore.
A group used to setup on the Mooloolaba Esplanade some years ago for some outreach.
Astroron is out the back of Kenilworth at Cambroon.

Sadly the groups all scattered to the wind and any attempt to set up another have failed. Light pollution up here is harsh - VERY harsh (tourist lighting etc).
I occasionally go into the pine plantations not far from here for some dark therapy, but it can be dangerous - off road bikes and 4WD's beating the tracks even at night and drug deals too. Safe in numbers.
Thankfully we are going VERY bush for Christmas this year so I will get some pitch black skies at last. The type of black where you swear you can hear the roar of the cosmos...

The Sunshine Coast Astronomical Society, (SCAS) folded over ten years ago due to a number of factors, primarily the insurance debacle around that time caused many clubs and societies of all descriptions, not just astro societies to close down.
Another factor was the apathy of the sunshine coast astronomy community,
If it was not on their doorstep then any activity was too far away to travel.
As a former president and other office bearer of many years of the club, it was sad to see it fold after about 25 years of trying to bring astronomy to the people of the sunshine coast.
A few people have asked me and others to start a club up again, but after canvassing around, the willingness was not there.
Iceinspace is my club of choice now, I can communicate at the click of a mouse and if anyone wants to organised an Astro night then they just send me a message, or come to the monthly Cambroon nights held on the closest Saturday of the month here at my place near Kenilworth.
Cheers

Lewis, are you going to do us all a favour and shoot down the Moon? ;)

No, that'd be barbaric and not sporting. :)
