Fossil Shell

We recently did some landscaping and found a solid seam of what appeared to be limestone. On closer inspection the texture and make-up of the material was reminiscent of similar layers at a nearby beach on Bass Strait.

Perhaps this is all too common and of no particular interest, but unearthing a fossilized shell (I presume it to be) in the back yard generated some excitement.

It's fragile and no attempt has been made to clean it up. I wonder how many I slashed through with the shovel.

Nice find Rowland, and a bit exciting I'm sure.
There is a place along the coast here, on my side of bass Strait, called Fossil Bluff (at Wynyard) that abounds in these.

The Hellyer Gorge is another spot, I recall. The surf beach on my side has thick layers of limestone interleaved/overlayed with basalt. The dunes in places are thick with shells.

Hellyer Gorge is a beautiful spot and will be walked more than once by me next fungi season :-)
We have the same here along the coast with basalt overlays and columns.
