Next week SBS screens the doco Chasing Pluto, with new discoveries from the New Horizons spacecraft.

In July 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft, one of the most advanced ever built, travelled past Pluto to take the very first detailed images of the dwarf planet.

After nine years and three billion miles, humans will finally get a close look at this strange, icy world, but only if the craft can survive the final, treacherous leg of its journey, which could take it through a dangerous field of debris.

This documentary captures the dramatic new discoveries, not just about Pluto, but about the vast realm of icy bodies lurking beyond Neptune, relics of the earliest days of the solar system’s formation.

Back on Earth, the planetary scientists who have spent decades working on this mission anxiously await a signal from their spacecraft, with cameras there to witness the moment.

Monday, 7 December at 7.30pm on SBS

You're all welcome!

I should point out that after Chasing Pluto, Meteor Strike: Fireball from Space is on.

Meteor Strike: Fireball from Space
8.30pm - 9.30pm
SBS
On the morning of February 15, 2013, a 7000-tonne asteroid, with the power of 30 Hiroshima bombs, crashed into the Earth's atmosphere. A blinding flash of light streaked across the Russian sky, followed by a shuddering blast strong enough to damage buildings and send more than 1000 people to hospital. Follow the impact scientists in Russia just days after, as they hunt for clues about the meteor's origin and makeup. From their findings, it's clear we came close to a far worse disaster. This documentary asks what are the chances of another - larger - asteroid heading straight for earth.

Chasing Pluto was excellent. Explained the history and science and what the mission aims were very clearly and in a way that would get people interested.

Two worthwhile doco's, both were quite enjoyable.

....and of course there's always SBS on demand for those of us who missed it!

If only we could do that with real life observing ;-)

Saw them both and thought they were terrible. Yes, some interesting info. but, such poor presentation and so repetitive, especially Meteor Strike, which I didn't bother finish watching. Just kept the same video clips playing over and over. :mad2:

Thanks for the heads up. I'll see if I can catch both docos on SBS On Demand :D.
I own a piece of that Russian meteorite :D.
I have a feeling I may have seeing the Pluto doco on Foxtel recently though.

The Pluto one was very good, very informative.
It was fairly up to date, but as you say,you could have seen it on Foxtel as you're so ahead of the normal viewing Chanells.
I think the one on the Russian meteorite was an amalgam of bits and pieces of other programs on this subject I have seen before.
Cheers:thumbsup:

I missed Chasing Pluto, so I searched for it on youtube. Did it have the irritatingly dramatic American voice overs on it?
