Intrigued by these digital weather stations, wondering what people's experiences are with them here and what to look for before purchasing.

From what I can make out,the cheap ones are around $150 ish dollars,an upper model around $650 had a look at this one in link.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Davis-Vantage-Vue-6250AU-Weather-Station-with-AUST-DAVIS-WARRANTY-/262052685347?hash=item3d038ea623:g: 9DAAAOSwo6lWQAi3

and then noticed another model around $950.

So,what do people have here? I have heard the cheapie ones can last as long as 5 years before going pear shape, are the more expensive ones worth it?

Thanks for any info.

I use a cheapie - about $119 for the last one I bought. The most common problem I have found is the rain tippler gets tied up with spider webs (it must annoy them;)) and the wind direction bearings foul up with moss or some similar green growing stuff. Its about an annual to 18 month job for me to do a bit of maintenance and either swap or clean the wind direction gauge, the anemometer and clean and spray the rain tipler with surface spray.

I've have one remote transmitter fail, and one base station screen fail, but I have enough parts between the 2 that I've bought to swap them out and service and repair, etc.

There's a lot of good info here:

Holy smokes! 20 pages of light reading. :D

Thanks for the link, I will peruse that thread at leisure.

Was just going to comment I have been having the exact same thoughts as Chris.
I think ultimately I want one that will last but I would love it to be able to come with software or be able to send the data to my PC.

Off to do some reading.

I have the Davis Vantage Vue and have had it for 4 years now and it is a rippa the unit I have mounted on the roof I have never changed the batteries as the solar panel charges It the weather that it forecasts is very accurate and there are lots of functions I would say the Davis is well worth the money for a serious weather station hope this helps
cheers Pete

Thanks all !!! whoa! 20 pages on one thread re weather stations LOL!

Good to get some feed back,I like the idea of the Davis ones, and 'buy once-cry once' and get on with it. All my trail cameras are the more expensive ones and left in bush for many months unattended, worth the investment,so too a Davis station.

Try this unit. I've had mine up about a year and works great. Its wireless and connects to wunderground.com via the internet.

I am wanting to get a decent weather station aswell (without killing my wallet - a Davis is a bit exxy) so I welcome any suggestions.
