Phew - I thought today was the 11th and it was almost past.... and we'd somehow forgotten the annual "Lest We Forget" thread.

I googled today's date and we're redeemed - today is only the 10th.

So allow me to commence the once yearly thread where we remember those who gave their lives that we might enjoy freedom.....

Lest we forget.....

Lest We Forget.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,

Extract "In Flanders Fields"
by John McCrae

from hence the tradition of the Remembrance Day Poppies

so much suffering, lets not forget their personal sacrifices in defence of this beautiful country

Personally, I like to commemorate by reciting my favourite Wilfred Owen poetry:

Anthem for Doomed Youth

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.
